SSC CGL 2020 : Exam Pattern

Staff Selection Commission of India will be conducting SSC CGL 2020 Exam in four stages: Tier-1, Tier-2, Tier-3 & Tier-4 exam. While Tier-I & Tier-II exam will be conducted online, Tier-III will be a pen and paper based exam and Tier-IV will be a computer skill test. a)  Tier -I:- Written Examination (Multiple Choice- Computer Based Test).
b)  Tier -II:-  Written Examination (Multiple Choice- Computer Based Test).
c)  Tier -III: – Descriptive Test (Pen and Paper Mode).
d)  Tier -IV: – Data Entry Skill Test/Computer Proficiency Test (if applicable)

This is good for preparing to make a note of SSC CGL Exam Pattern, before starting the exam SSC CGL preparation. SSC CGL Exam Pattern 2020 for Tier 1 & 2 are given below:

  • SSC CGL 2020 Tier 1 and Tier 2 exam will be held online.
  • A descriptive paper is introduced which will be of 100 marks with a time limit of 60 minutes in pen and paper mode.
  • The time limit for examination of Tier -I is 60 minutes.
  • There will be no sectional cut off.

Minimum qualifying marks in Tier-I, each Paper of Tier-II and Tier-III Examination are as follows:

UR 30%
OBC/ EWS 25%
Others 20%

1. SSC CGL 2020 Tier I Examination
It consists of a paper of Objective type (multiple choice questions) and carries a maximum of 200 marks to be solved in duration of 1hr.

The scheme of this test is given below in a table:

Penalty for wrong answer:
There is a negative marking of 1/4 Marks for each wrong answer. There is no sectional cut off. No point will be deducted if the question is left blank or unattempted by a candidate. For visually handicapped Person the exam duration is 80 minutes.

2. SSC CGL 2020 Tier II Examination
This test is also a multiple choice objective paper, but unlike Tier I, it held over a period of two days. For all posts excluding that related to Assistant Audit officer and Statistical Investigator, there are only two tests namely Quantitative Abilities and English Language. After Tier II test, the merit is made based on aggregate marks of Tier I and Tier II.

The scheme of this test is given below in a table:

Penalty for wrong answer:
There is a negative marking of 1/4 for each wrong answer. There is no sectional cut off. No point will be deducted if the question is left blank or unattempted by a candidate. For visually handicapped Person the exam duration is 2 hours 40 minutes.
Note-:

  • In Tier-II, Paper-I and Paper-II are compulsory for all the posts.
  • In Tier-II, Paper-III will be for only those candidates who apply for the post of Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) and who are shortlisted in Tier-I for this Post/ Paper.
  • In Tier-II, Paper-IV will be for only those candidates who are shortlisted in Tier-I for Paper-IV i.e. for the posts of Assistant Audit Officer/ Assistant Accounts Officer.

3. SSC CGL 2020 Tier III Examination
SSC - CGL Tier III is a descriptive type Examination and it is consist of easy writing and letter writing on the current issues of the country.
Tier-3 of SSC CGL will be a descriptive test. The paper will be in English/Hindi and will constitute of 100 marks. The entire paper needs to be completed in 60 minutes.

Tier-I, Tier-II & Tier-III exam is compulsory for all posts mentioned in the SSC CGL 2019 Notification.

4. SSC CGL 2020 Tier IV Examination
After clearing the Tier I and Tier II, the selected candidates gets qualified for Tier III. In this Tier, SSC checks Computer Proficiency Test/ Skills for the selected posts (SSC would name those posts in the upcoming notification) and this round is also meant for document verification for all the selected candidates.
SSC CGL Tier-4 Exam is a Computer Skill Test. It will be conducted in two steps: DEST Test & CPT Test.

DEST:- Candidates are required to type 2000 words in 15 minutes on a computer in English. This test is conducted to check a candidate's writing skills.

CPT:- This test is conducted to check a candidate's proficiency in Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Generation of Slides.

Tier 4 Exam Pattern
Skill Test For the post of
Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) Assistant Section Officer in CSS, MEA & AFHQ, Assistant in Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Assistant (GSI) in the Ministry of Mines, Inspector (Central Excise), Inspector (Preventive Officer) & Inspector (Examiner) in CBIC.
DEST Tax Assistant (CBDT & CBEC)

Document Verification: The last step to the final selection would be Document Verification.
Final Selection
The final selection will be based on the candidate’s performance in Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3. Recruitment will be based on the candidates marks, rank achieved and their post preferences.
