Usage: It is not polite to eavesdrop on the conversation of other people.
2. ESPIONAGE (noun) – जासूसी
Pronunciation: es-pi-un-aaj
Meaning: the practice of spying or of using spies, typically by governments to obtain political and military information
Synonyms: spying, surveillance, reconnaissance
Usage: Espionage is a capital offence in this country.
3. TRAVESTY (noun, verb) – उपहासात्मक निरूपण
Pronunciation: tra-visti
Meaning: a false, absurd, or distorted representation of something; represent in a false, absurd, or distorted way
Synonyms: misrepresentation, distortion, perversion; parody, caricature, burlesque, mock
Usage: It would be a travesty of justice to put an innocent man in jail.
4. RESPITE (noun) – स्थगन, विराम
Pronunciation: res-pit / res-pa-it
Meaning: a short period of rest or relief from something difficult or unpleasant; postpone (a sentence, obligation, etc.)
Synonyms: rest, break, breathing space, interval, intermission, interlude
Usage: We worked for hours without respite.
5. BARBARIC (adjective) – असभ्य
Pronunciation: baar-barik
Meaning: savagely cruel; unsophisticated; uncultured
Synonyms: cruel, brutal, barbarous, brutish, bestial; uncivilized, primitive, unsophisticated, barbarous, heathen
Antonyms: benevolent, civilized, sophisticated
Usage: The cruel animal owners were known to treat their dogs in a barbaric manner.
6. INCUMBENT (adjective, noun) – अनिवार्य, पदधारी
Pronunciation: in kum-b(u)nt
Meaning: necessary for (someone) as a duty or responsibility; the holder of an office or post
Synonyms: binding, obligatory, mandatory, necessary, compulsory; holder, bearer, occupant
Antonym: optional
Usage:
- It is incumbent upon parents to control what their children watch on TV. (adjective)
- The present incumbent will soon be retiring. (noun)
7. INAPT (adjective) – नामुनासिब, अनुपयुक्त
Pronunciation: in-apt
Meaning: not suitable or appropriate in the circumstances
Synonyms: unsuitable, unfitting, ill-suited, unseemly, unprofessional
Antonyms: appropriate, suitable
Usage: He always makes inapt remarks.
8. CARP (verb) – नुकताचीनी करना
Pronunciation: kaarp
Meaning: complain or find fault continually about trivial matters
Synonyms: complain, cavil, grumble, moan, grouse, grouch, whine
Antonyms: praise, forgiving, complimentary
Usage: He always finds something to carp about.
9. RESPLENDENT (adjective) – देदीप्यमान
Pronunciation: ri-splen-d(u)nt
Meaning: attractive and impressive through being richly colourful or sumptuous
Synonyms: splendid, magnificent, dazzling, glittering, radiant, gorgeous
Antonyms: dull, boring, repulsive
Usage: The queen was resplendent with jewels.
10. BEREAVE (verb) – वंचित करना
Pronunciation: bi-reev
Meaning: be deprived of a close relation or friend through their death
Synonyms: deprive, dispossess
Usage: He was bereaved of his wife last year.
