1. GNARLED (adjective) – ऐंठा हुआ
Pronunciation: naald
Meaning: rough and twisted (especially with age)
Synonyms: knotty, knotted, gnarly, lumpy, bumpy
Antonym: straight
Usage: His hands were gnarled with arthritis.

2. HARLEQUIN (adjective) – बहुरंगा
Pronunciation: haali-kwin
Meaning: in varied colours
Synonyms: varicoloured, variegated, colourful, particoloured, multicoloured
Antonyms: plain
Usage: The kid was happy in his harlequin costume.

3. OLEAGINOUS (adjective) – अति विनम्र
Pronunciation: oli-aji-nus
Meaning: very much eager to praise, obey, or serve someone
Synonyms: servile, ingratiating, unctuous, sycophantic, fawning
Antonym: domineer
Usage: Candidates made oleaginous speeches praising government policies.

4. MALIGN (adjective, verb) – दुष्ट; चुगली करना
Pronunciation: mul-ain
Meaning: evil in nature or effect; speak about someone in critical manner
Synonyms: harmful, evil, bad, baleful, hostile, inimical; defame, slander, libel, smear
Antonyms: beneficial, praise
Usage:

  • Your behaviour had a malign influence on the children. (adjective)
  • I wish to malign no one. (verb)

5. NOVICE (noun) – नौसिखिया
Pronunciation: novis
Meaning: a person new to and inexperienced in a job or situation
Synonyms: beginner, learner, neophyte, newcomer
Antonyms: expert, veteran
Usage: I'm a complete novice at skiing.

6. PROVIDENT (adjective) – अग्रदर्शी
Pronunciation: provi-d(u)nt
Meaning: making or indicative of timely preparation for the future
Synonyms: prudent, far-sighted, judicious, shrewd, circumspect, forearmed
Antonym: improvident
Usage: A provident father plans for his children's education.

7. CONTRAVENE (verb) – अवहेलना करना
Pronunciation: kontra-veen
Meaning: to do something that a law or rule does not allow, or to break a law or rule
Synonyms: break, breach, violate, infringe
Antonym: uphold
Usage: The content of the settlement agreement shall not contravene the law.

8. CONTRITE (adjective) – पश्चातापी
Pronunciation: kun-tr-ait / kon-tr-ait
Meaning: feeling very sorry and guilty for something bad that someone has done
Synonyms: remorseful, repentant, penitent, regretful, sorry
Antonyms: unrepentant, defiant
Usage: She must be humble and contrite.

9. DERISORY (adjective) – अपर्याप्त
Pronunciation: di-rai-s(u)ri / di-rai-z(u)ri
Meaning: ridiculously small or inadequate
Synonyms: insufficient, tiny, small, minimal, trifling
Usage: We were awarded a derisory sum of money.

10. DEPRECATORY (adjective) – अस्वीकार करना; क्षमायाचक
Pronunciation: dep-ruk-ei-turi
Meaning: expressing disapproval; apologetic
Synonyms: disapproving, censorious, censuring, critical, scathing, damning; apologetic, regretful
Antonym: unrepentant
Usage:

  • Other ranking officers have also made deprecatory and abusive comments about the defence minister at international meetings.
  • Austin waved them away with a deprecatory gesture and a smile.
