1. SUBDUE (verb) – अधीन करना, वश में करना
Pronunciation: sub-dyoo
Meaning: overcome, quieten, or bring under control (a feeling or person)
Synonyms: conquer, defeat, vanquish, overpower, overcome, overwhelm
Antonyms: aggrandize, exalt, fortify, strengthen, empower, liberate
Usage: Police managed to subdue the angry crowd.

2. ENFRANCHISE (verb) – मताधिकार देना, मुक्त करना
Pronunciation: en-fran-chaiz / in-fran-chaiz
Meaning: give the right to vote; free (a slave)
Synonyms: give suffrage to, grant suffrage to, grant franchise to; emancipate, liberate, free, release
Antonyms: disenfranchise; enslave
Usage:

  • In Britain, women were enfranchised in 1918.
  • He campaigned against Americans to get Africans enfranchised.

3. NONCHALANCE (noun) – नीरवता, शीतलता
Pronunciation: non-sh(u)l(u)ns
Meaning: the state of being casually calm and relaxed; not displaying anxiety, interest, or enthusiasm
Synonyms: calmness, coolness, insouciance, unconcern
Antonyms: anxiety, concern
Usage: He hides his worries behind a mask of nonchalance.

4. PETULANCE (noun) – झल्लाहट
Pronunciation: peh-choo-luhns
Meaning: easily annoyed and complaining in a rude way like a child
Synonyms: peevishness, bad temper, ill temper, pettishness, pique, impatience, irritability
Antonyms: amiability, charity, forbearance, gentleness, leniency
Usage: After being fouled out of the basketball game, the player displayed his petulance by kicking over a chair.

5. TEMPEST (noun) – आंधी, तूफ़ान
Pronunciation: tem-pist
Meaning: a violent windy storm
Synonyms: storm, squall, gale, hurricane, tornado, cyclone, typhoon
Antonyms: tranquillity
Usage: The tempest hit the town very badly.

6. CONTRETEMPS (noun) – मामूली विवाद; दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण घटना
Pronunciation: kon-truh-tom
Meaning: a minor dispute or disagreement; an unexpected and unfortunate occurrence
Synonyms: argument, quarrel, squabble, altercation, clash, fight; mishap, misadventure, accident, mischance
Usage: They have been ignoring me since our last contretemps.

7. CONTEND (verb) – संघर्ष करना
Pronunciation: kun-tend
Meaning: struggle to overcome a difficulty; compete with others in a struggle to achieve something
Synonyms: face, grapple with, resist, withstand; compete, challenge, vie, contest
Usage:

  • They have to contend against draught every year.
  • The firm is too small to contend against large international companies.

8. JAB (verb, noun) – प्रहार, मुक्का
Pronunciation: jab
Meaning: to push or hit something forcefully and quickly, often with a thin or sharp object; a quick, sharp blow, especially with the fist
Synonyms: poke, prod, dig, nudge, shove
Usage:

  • She jabbed her finger in his ribs. (verb)
  • The boy received a jab. (noun)

9. PURLOIN (verb) – चोरी करना
Pronunciation: puh-loin
Meaning: steal something
Synonyms: steal, thieve, take, loot, pilfer
Usage: He must have purloined the key from somewhere.

10. DISCREPANCY (noun) – अंतर, भिन्नता
Pronunciation: dis-krep(u)nsi
Meaning: the state or quality of being in disagreement; an unexpected difference
Synonyms: inconsistency, difference, disparity, variance, variation, deviation, divergence
Antonyms: similarity, correspondence
Usage: A greater cause for resentment is the discrepancy in pay.
