Here some exceptional English words from the newspaper ‘The Hindu’ are given with their synonyms/antonyms and usage. Hopefully, this will help you improve your vocabulary.

1. TREPIDATION (noun) घबराहट
Pronunciation: trepi-dei-sh(u)n
Meaning: a feeling of fear or anxiety about something that may happen
Synonyms: fear, apprehension, dread
Antonyms: calm, equanimity, composure
Usage: We view future developments with some trepidation.
 
2. SCRUPLE (noun, verb) संदेह; संदेह करना
Pronunciation: skroo-p(u)l
Meaning: a feeling of doubt or hesitation with regard to the morality or propriety of a course of action; hesitate or be reluctant to do something that one thinks may be wrong
Synonyms: qualms, compunction, hesitation; hesitate
Antonym: jump at the chance
Usage:
She tells lies without scruple. (noun)
Don't scruple to ask for anything you want. (verb)
 
3. BROACH (verb) विषय छेड़ना
Pronunciation: bro-ch
Meaning: raise (a difficult subject) for discussion
Synonyms: bring up, raise, introduce, talk about, mention, touch on
Usage:  He decided not to broach the subject of divorce until his wife had recovered from her illness.
 
4. RECTITUDE (noun) निष्कपटता, सत्यपरायणता
Pronunciation: rekti-tyood
Meaning: morally correct behaviour or thinking        
Synonyms: righteousness, goodness, virtue, morality, honour
Antonyms: dishonesty
Usage: Never turn aside from the path of rectitude.
 
5. SLOG (verb, noun) – कड़ी मेहनत करना; थकानेवाला काम
Pronunciation: slog
Meaning: work hard over a period of time; a spell of difficult, tiring work or travelling
Synonyms: toil, labour; hard work, toiling, struggle, effort, exertion
Antonyms: skive, take it easy; leisure, relaxation
Usage:
There is no alternative to sitting down and slogging through long lists of vocabulary. (verb)
The exams were a real hard slog, but I'm glad I did well in them. (noun)
6. BETROTHED (noun) मंगेतर
Pronunciation: bit-ro-thd
Meaning: the person to whom one is engaged
Synonyms: promised, pledged, contracted, bound, affianced, plighted, espoused, handfast
Antonyms: unattached, single
Usage: He introduced us to his betrothed.
 
7. SCALD (verb, noun) जलाना; जलने का दाग
Pronunciation: sko-ld
Meaning: injure with very hot liquid or steam; a burn or other injury caused by hot liquid or steam
Synonyms: burn, scorch, sear, cauterize
Usage:
The tea scalded his tongue. (verb)
This kind of ointment will heal the scald. (noun)
 
8. TROT (verb, noun) दुलकी चाल
Pronunciation: trot
Meaning: (of a person) run at a moderate pace with short steps; an act or period of trotting; a trotting pace
Synonyms: run, jog, jogtrot, dogtrot, lope
Usage:
The child trotted obediently at the sight of candies. (verb)
You might like an early morning trot along the river.  (noun)
Our horses slowed to a trot. (noun)
 
9. SCAM (noun, verb) घोटाला; घोटाला करना
Pronunciation: skam
Meaning: a dishonest scheme; participate in a dishonest scheme
Synonyms: fraud, swindle, racket, trick, diddle
Usage:
He had no participation in the scam. (noun)
That man has been accused of scamming. (verb)
 
10. SERVITUDE (noun) दासत्व, ग़ुलामी
Pronunciation: suhvi-tyood
Meaning: the state of being a slave or completely subject to someone more powerful
Synonyms: slavery, enslavement, bondage, subjugation, domination
Antonyms: freedom, liberty
Usage: The maid spent her entire life in servitude so she could provide her daughter with quality education.
