Here some exceptional English words from the newspaper ‘The Hindu’ are given with their synonyms/antonyms and usage. Hopefully, this will help you improve your vocabulary.

1. IMMERSE (verb) – डुबो देना; ध्यानमग्न होना
Pronunciation: imuhs
Meaning: dip or submerge in a liquid; involve oneself deeply in a particular activity
Synonyms: submerge, plunge, dunk, sink, souse; absorb, engross, occupy, engage
Usage:
Immerse the paper in water for twenty minutes.
She immersed herself in her work.
2. CONFLUENCE (noun) – संगम, मिलाप
Pronunciation: kon-flu-uns
Meaning: the junction of two rivers, especially rivers of approximately equal width
Synonyms: convergence, meeting, junction, joining, conflux
Usage: It’s the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss.
3. TERSE (adjective) – संक्षिप्त, मुख़्तसर
Pronunciation: tuhs
Meaning: using very few words; (a statement or comment) very brief and unfriendly
Synonyms: curt, brusque, abrupt, clipped, blunt, gruff
Antonyms: long-winded, verbose, rambling, polite
Usage: When Jessie is angry, she only gives terse responses.
4. ENCLOSURE (noun) – घेरा
Pronunciation: en-klo-zuh / in-klo-zuh
Meaning: an area that is surrounded by a barrier
Synonyms: paddock, fold, pen, compound, stockade, ring, yard
Usage: She keeps a horse in that enclosure.
5. PROMONTORY (adjective) – अंतरीप
Pronunciation: prom(u)nturi
Meaning: a high point of land or rock projecting into a body of water
Synonyms: headland, foreland, peninsula, spit
Usage: The plane crashed and fell on a promontory.
6. ENVIRONS (noun) – परिप्रदेश, नगरोपान्त
Pronunciation: in-vai-runz
Meaning: the surrounding area or district
Synonyms: surroundings, vicinity, locality
Usage: The town and its environs are inviting.
7. FLEE (verb) – भाग जाना, चंपत हो जाना
Pronunciation: flee
Meaning: run away from a place or situation of danger
Synonyms: run, run away, run off, escape
Antonyms: face, encounter
Usage: The man was able to flee the area, but was captured a few miles outside of Dallas.
8. HOBO (noun) – आवारा
Pronunciation: ho-bo
Meaning: a homeless person
Synonyms: tramp, vagrant, vagabond, derelict
Usage: The hobo was wearing only one shoe.
9. YES-MAN (noun) – हाँ में हाँ मिलाने वाला
Pronunciation: yes-man
Meaning: a weak leader who always agrees with his political leader or his superior at work
Synonyms: sychophant, toady, lackey
Antonyms: apostate, defector
Usage: I don’t want you to be just a yes-man, you should share your own opinions too.
10. INCARCERATION (noun) – क़ैद, बन्दीकरण
Pronunciation: in-kaa-sur-ei-shun
Meaning: a state of being confined in prison
Synonyms: imprisonment, internment, confinement, custody
Antonym: freedom
Usage: Everyone is still sad and depressed about Dana’s incarceration.
