1. VIRAGO (noun) – कर्कशा झगड़ालू औरत
Pronunciation: vi-rei-go / vi-raa-go
Meaning: a domineering, violent, or bad-tempered woman
Synonyms: harridan, shrew, termagant, vixen, fishwife
Antonyms: belle, beautiful, queen of hearts
Usage: When the little boy dropped his ice cream, the virago grew red with anger and punished the child severely.
2. BOURGEOIS (adjective, noun) – पूंजीपति, संपत्तिजीवी
Pronunciation: bowj-waa
Meaning: belonging to or typical of the middle class (a social group between the rich and the poor) especially in supporting existing customs and values, or in having a strong interest in money and possessions
Synonyms: middle-class, property-owning, propertied, conventional, traditional, conservative, conformist, ordinary
Antonyms: proletarian, unconventional
Usage:
- She came from a respectable bourgeois family. (adjective)
- The princess was excluded from the territory for marrying a bourgeois. (noun)
3. PURVEY (verb) – रसद पहुँचाना
Pronunciation: puh-vei
Meaning: provide or supply (food, drink, or other goods) as one's business
Synonyms: supply, provide, furnish, cater, retail, trade
Usage: They have two restaurants that purvey dumplings and chicken noodle soup.
4. FALTER (verb) – लड़खड़ाना; हकलाना
Pronunciation: fol-tuh
Meaning: lose strength or momentum; speak hesitantly
Synonyms: hesitate, delay, drag one's feet, stall, think twice; stammer, stutter, stumble
Usage:
- The economy is beginning to falter.
- His voice began to falter.
5. JILT (verb) – परित्याग करना
Pronunciation: jilt
Meaning: suddenly reject or abandon (a lover)
Synonyms: leave, walk out on, throw over, finish with, break up with
Usage: He jilted her for his best friend's sister.
6. TEMPERANCE (noun) – आत्मसंयम
Pronunciation: temp(u)r(u)ns
Meaning: control of your own behaviour, such as not drinking or eating too much; the habit of not drinking alcohol because you believe it is dangerous or wrong
Synonyms: abstinence, abstention, sobriety, prohibition
Antonyms: bibulousness, crapulence
Usage: The old man preached temperance to young people.
7. THWART (verb) – नाकाम करना
Pronunciation: thwort
Meaning: oppose (a plan, attempt, or ambition) successfully
Synonyms: foil, frustrate, balk, forestall, scotch, derail
Antonyms: assist, facilitate
Usage: The government had been able to thwart all attempts by opposition leaders to form new parties.
8. VIRILE (adjective) – पुरुष या पुरुषत्व संबंधी
Pronunciation: vi-rail
Meaning: (of a man) having strength and energy
Synonyms: manly, masculine, all-male, gallant, chivalrous, swashbuckling, valiant, valorous
Antonyms: unmanly, effeminate, weak
Usage: He wanted his sons to become strong, virile, and athletic like himself.
9. PURGE (verb) – शुद्ध करना
Pronunciation: puhj
Meaning: free someone or something from an unwanted quality, condition, or feeling; remove (a group of people considered undesirable) from an organization or place in an abrupt or violent way
Synonyms: cleanse, clear, purify, wash, shrive, absolve; remove, get rid of, expel, exclude
Usage:
- Roman Catholics go to confession to purge themselves of sin.
- Party leaders are going to purge the party of extremists.
10. WILT (verb) – मुरझाना, दुर्बल होना
Pronunciation: wilt
Meaning: (of a plant, leaf, or flower) to become weak and begin to bend towards the ground; (of a person) lose energy, vigour, or confidence
Synonyms: droop, sag, flop, wither; languish, flag
Antonyms: thrive, flourish; perk up
Usage:
- The plants will wilt in direct sunlight.
- Lady Beresford was beginning to wilt as she greeted the long line of guests.
