How to solve Phrase Replacement:
Phrase Replacement is the most important and high scoring section in verbal ability portion. To score good in this, one should enhance one’s verbal ability by reading from Standard English language source(s) on regular basis. This will help to develop the natural understanding of correct sentence structures. There are some grammar basic rules, which one must know for better understanding of Phrase Replacement questions. A few of those rules are discussed below:
(i) This should be kept in mind that if subject is singular, then the verb will take a singular form. And if subject is plural, then the verb will take a plural form.
(ii) In case, the subject is a collective noun, then the verb will take a singular form.
(iii) In case, the subjects are connected by ‘and’; they require a plural verb.
(iv) If the subjects are connected by ‘or’, the verb used will be singular.
(v) In case there are two different subjects; the verb is put matching the closer subject.
(vi) All the sentences that begin with ‘each’, ‘everyone’ and ‘anyone’ will have a singular verb.
(vii) Repetition error is the error of writing the same thing twice.
For example:
• He returned back from Delhi. (wrong)
• He came back from Delhi. (right)
• He returned from Delhi. (right)
(viii) A common mistake is to leave a participle without a subject.
Example: Seating on the gate, a scorpion stung him.
Here, ‘seating’ cannot be used for scorpion as it is grammatically incorrect. So, the correct way of saying should be -
Seating on the gate, he was stung by a scorpion.
OR
While he was seating on the gate, a scorpion stung him.
Apart from these, all grammar formulae should be memorized because these formulae will help not only in attempting Phrase Replacement questions but also in attempting all grammar based questions.
