Here some exceptional English words from the newspaper ‘The Hindu’ are given with their synonyms/antonyms and usage. Hopefully, this will help you improve your vocabulary.

1. TRUCULENT (adjective) – झगड़ालू
Pronunciation: truk-yu-lunt
Meaning: eager or quick to argue or fight
Synonyms: defiant, aggressive, antagonistic, belligerent, pugnacious, bellicose, combative, confrontational
Antonyms: cooperative, friendly, amiable
Usage: He became very truculent and started arguing with me angrily.

2. IMPINGE (verb) – प्रभाव डालना
Pronunciation: im-pinj
Meaning: have an effect, especially a negative one
Synonyms: affect, influence
Usage: She did not allow her personal problems to impinge on her work.

3. CONSTRAINT (noun) – बाध्यता
Pronunciation: kun-streint
Meaning: a restriction; stiffness of manner
Synonyms: limitation, curb, check, restraint, control, curtailment; inhibition, uneasiness, embarrassment
Antonym: openness
Usage:
• Time constraints make it impossible to do everything.

4. PROSCRIBE (verb) – अभिनिषिद्ध करना; निंदा करना

Meaning: refuse to allow something to someone, especially by law; express complete disapproval; criticize
Synonyms: forbid, prohibit, ban, disallow; condemn, denounce, attack, criticize, censure, denigrate

Usage:

5. ACQUIESCENCE (noun) – चुपचाप स्वीकृति

Usage: Despite the wife’s acquiescence, he still complained constantly and was never happy.

6. ASSAY (noun, verb) – परख; परखना
Pronunciation: us-ei / as-ei
Meaning: the testing of a metal or ore to determine its ingredients and quality
Synonyms: evaluation, assessment, analysis, examination, test, trial, check, inspection
Usage:

7. AMULET (noun) – ताबीज

Meaning: an ornament or small piece of jewellery thought to give protection against evil, danger, or disease

8. AVARICIOUS (adjective) – लालची
