1. WHEREWITHAL (noun) साधन
Pronunciation: we-with-ol
Meaning: the money or other means needed for a particular purpose
Synonyms: resources, funds, reserves, means
Usage: As a billionaire, the man had the wherewithal to start up any business he wished.
 
2. MANOEUVRE (noun, verb) पैंतरेबाज़ी
Pronunciation: mun-oo-vuh
Meaning: a movement or series of moves requiring skill and care; move skilfully or carefully
Synonyms: operation, exercise, activity
Usage:
  • The pilot had to make a daring manoeuvre to avoid a missile that was coming to destroy his plane. (noun)
  • She managed to manoeuvre expertly into the parking space. (verb)
3. PLAGUE (noun, verb) – विपत्ति, कष्ट, तंग करना
Pronunciation: pleig
Meaning: a thing causing trouble or irritation; to cause continual trouble or distress; harass someone continually
Synonyms: bane, curse, scourge, affliction, blight; afflict, bedevil, torture; pester, badger, bother, persecute
Antonyms: aid, advantage, benefit
Usage:
  • If you don't start treating people with a little more respect, people may start avoiding you like the plague. (noun)
  • The little girl likes to plague the cat by pulling its tail. (verb)
4. DOVISH (adjective) – शांतिवादी, अमनपसंद, युद्धविरोधी
Pronunciation: duv-ish
Meaning: Someone who favors political policies that promote peace, rather than conflict with other countries.
Synonyms: pacifist, pacifistic, peaceable, peaceful
Antonyms: unpeaceful, hawkish, unfriendly
Usage: A dovish president is more likely to sign peace treaties than to start a war.
 
5. RAKE UP (verb) प्रसंगवश उल्लेख करना; याद दिलाना

Meaning: to mention something unpleasant that happened in the past and that someone else does not want to talk about

Usage: It’s of no use to rake up an old quarrel.
6. QUASH (verb) – रद्द करना, अमान्य करना

Meaning: reject as invalid, especially by legal procedure
Synonyms: cancel, rescind, repeal, revoke, retract, countermand, invalidate
Antonym: validate, sanction, formalise
Usage: The Chief Executive issued a statement to quash rumours of financial problems.
 
7. DEIFY (verb) – देव/देवी तुल्‍य मानना

Meaning: worship or regard as a god
Synonyms: revere, venerate, reverence, exalt, adore
Antonym: demonize
Usage: Roman people deify their emperor.
 
8. TIGHT-FISTED (adjective) – कंजूस
Pronunciation: tait-fis-tid
Meaning: not willing to spend or give much money 
Synonyms: miserly, parsimonious, niggardly, close-fisted, penny-pinching, cheese-paring
Antonyms: generous, liberal, munificent, extravagant
Usage: His tight-fisted boss was unwilling to give him a salary hike.
 
9. STATUTORY (adjective) – क़ानूनी, वैधानिक
Pronunciation: stachu-t(u)ri
Meaning: required, permitted, or enacted by a written law passed by a legislative body
Synonyms: legal, lawful
Antonyms: illegal, unlawful, illicit, illegitimate
Usage: Currently, we are making the statutory enquiries.
 
10. BOUT (noun) – आवेग, मुकाबला
Pronunciation: baut
Meaning: a short period of intense activity of a specified kind; an attack of illness or strong emotion; a wrestling or boxing match
Synonyms: spell, period, time, stretch, stint; attack, fit, spasm, paroxysm, convulsion; contest, match, competition, tournament
Usage:
  • A young baby may frequently get a bout of hiccups during or soon after a feed.
  • I got a bad bout of flu last winter.
  • Whenever she finds herself under mental pressure, a bout of sobs begins.
  • He fought 350 bouts, losing only nine times.
