Here some exceptional English words from the newspaper ‘The Hindu’ are given with their synonyms/antonyms and usage. Hopefully, this will help you improve your vocabulary.

1. EMENDATION (noun) – अशुद्धियों को सुधारना

Pronunciation: ee-men-dei-sh(u)n

Meaning: the process of making a revision or correction to a text

Synonyms: correction, rectification, improvement

Usage: The editor performed one emendation after another on the poorly written manuscript.

2. OUTSTRIP (verb) – आगे बढ़ना, पीछे छोड़ना

Pronunciation: aut-strip

Meaning: move faster than and overtake someone else

Synonyms: outrun, outdistance, outpace, overtake, pass

Usage:

We soon outstripped the slower runners.
We outstripped all our competitors in sales last year.

3. SNOOTY (adjective) – घमण्डी, दम्भी, गर्वीला

Pronunciation: snooti

Meaning: showing disapproval or contempt towards others, especially those considered to belong to a lower social class

Synonyms: arrogant, proud, haughty, conceited, lofty, aloof, disdainful, supercilious

Antonyms: friendly, modest

Usage: She is very snooty; she never speaks to her neighbours.

4. DEMARCATION (noun) – सीमा-निर्धारण, सरहदबंदी

Pronunciation: dee-maa-kei-sh(u)n

Meaning: the action of fixing the boundary or limits of something; a dividing line

Synonyms: separation, distinction, differentiation, division, delimitation

Usage: Talks were continuing about the demarcation of the border between the two countries.

5. GAMBOL (verb, noun) – उल्लसित होना, नाचना-कूदना

Pronunciation: gam-b(u)l

Meaning: run or jump about playfully

Synonyms: frolic, frisk, cavort, caper, romp, prance

Usage:

Lambs were gamboling in the spring sunshine. (verb)
My dogs ran into the garden for a gambol together. (noun)

6. SCRIMMAGE (noun) – धक्का मुक्की, हाथापाई

Pronunciation: skri-mij

Meaning: a confused struggle or fight

Synonyms: fight, battle, struggle, tussle, brawl, fracas, rumpus, melee

Usage: Mr. Clements would decide who would become captain of the math team after the final team scrimmage.

7. NOOK (noun) – नुक्कड़, कोना

Pronunciation: nuk

Meaning: a corner, especially that offers security and the state of being private and away from other people

Synonyms: recess, corner, alcove, cranny

Usage: Pat and I found a shady nook at the edge of the park that was a perfect spot for a picnic.

8. DOFF (verb) – उतार देना

Pronunciation: dof

Meaning: remove (an item of clothing)

Synonyms: take off, remove, raise

Antonym: don

Usage: He doffed his hat to her as she passed in her carriage.

9. DANK (adjective) – नम और ठंडा

Pronunciation: dank

Meaning: unpleasantly cold and slightly wet

Synonyms: damp, musty, chilly, clammy, wet, moist

Antonym: dry

Usage: The air in the room was dank and thus I could not sleep.

10. RUE (verb, noun) – पछतावा करना; पछताना

Pronunciation: roo

Meaning: bitterly regret (something one has done or allowed to happen) and wish it undone

Synonyms: regret, lament, bemoan; repentance

Usage:

He will rue the day when he hurt her pride deeply. (verb)
I was crying because I had rue in my heart. (noun)
