World Population Day was established by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989. The Day is observed on 11 July every year focusing on spreading awareness regarding Gender issues, Maternal Health, Poverty & Human Rights. The day was encouraged by the 'Five Billion Day' which was previously observed on July 11, 1987. It was the day when the world population touched 5 billion people in number.

The World Population Day is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals such as SDG 3 for Good Health and Well being, SDG 5 for Gender Equality. Interestingly the countries like Japan & Italy are facing the 'Silver Tsunami' or the Population aging which means their recognizable population has entered above 65+ years also called the baby boomers.
