World Lupus Day: 10th May
Spreading Awareness About a Hidden Disease
World Lupus Day, observed annually on 10 May, is a global event dedicated to raising awareness about lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease. It brings attention to the struggles of millions living with the condition and calls for better understanding, early diagnosis, improved treatment, and increased research funding.
What is Lupus?
Lupus, medically known as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), is a complex autoimmune disease. In lupus, the immune system, which normally defends the body against infections, mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and organs. This causes inflammation and damage, affecting various parts of the body such as:
  • Skin
  • Joints
  • Kidneys
  • Brain
  • Heart and lungs
Symptoms of Lupus
Lupus symptoms vary from person to person, but common signs include:
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Joint pain and swelling
  • Fever
  • Butterfly-shaped facial rash
  • Hair loss
  • Photosensitivity (sensitivity to sunlight)
  • Kidney and heart issues
  • Cognitive or neurological symptoms
Because lupus mimics many other conditions, it is often difficult to diagnose, sometimes taking years.
Who is Affected?
  • Lupus affects people of all genders and ages, but 90% of cases are women, especially between ages 15 to 45.
  • It is more common in people of African, Asian, Hispanic, and Indigenous descent.
  • Genetics, hormones, and environmental triggers all play a role in the development of lupus.
History and Significance of World Lupus Day
World Lupus Day was first celebrated on May 10, 2004, initiated by lupus organizations from 13 countries. Since then, it has grown into a globally recognized awareness day to:
