World Elder Abuse Awareness Day: June 15th
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), observed annually on June 15th, serves as a global call to action to highlight the pervasive but often hidden issue of elder mistreatment, neglect, and exploitation. This day is dedicated to protecting the dignity, safety, and human rights of older adults worldwide.
Origins and Purpose:
WEAAD was first launched on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) at the United Nations. It gained international recognition in 2011 when the United Nations General Assembly officially designated June 15th as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (Resolution 66/127).
The primary goal of WEAAD is to:
  • Raise global awareness about the various forms of elder abuse, including physical, psychological, emotional, financial, and sexual abuse, as well as neglect and abandonment.
  • Promote a better understanding of the cultural, social, economic, and demographic factors contributing to elder abuse.
  • Encourage reporting and the establishment of robust support mechanisms for victims.
  • Advocate for strong legislative and social responses to prevent and address elder abuse.
  • Empower older persons and ensure their full participation in society, ensuring they live with dignity, respect, and safety.
Key Risk Factors:
  • Victim-related: Functional dependence/disability, poor physical or mental health, cognitive impairment, social isolation, and low income.
  • Perpetrator-related: Mental illness, substance abuse, and financial or other dependency on the victim.
  • Relationship-level: Dysfunctional family dynamics and conflicts.
  • Societal-level: Ageism, discrimination, and lack of adequate community support systems.
The 2025 Theme:
For 2025, the theme for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is "Addressing Abuse of Older Adults in Long Term Care Facilities: Through Data and Action." This theme emphasizes the critical need to:
  • Promote transparency in long-term care institutions.
  • Gather disaggregated data to inform targeted interventions.
  • Advocate for policy changes and staff training in these settings.
How to Observe WEAAD:
  • Wear Purple: Purple is the official color for WEAAD, symbolizing solidarity and support for the cause.
  • Spread Awareness: Share information about elder abuse prevention on social media using hashtags like #WorldElderAbuseAwarenessDay and #WEAAD2025.
  • Reach Out: Check in on older adults in your community, offering companionship and support.
  • Attend or Organize Events: Participate in webinars, workshops, or local community events focused on elder care and rights.
  • Advocate for Change: Support policies and initiatives that protect older adults from abuse and neglect.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day serves as a vital reminder that elder abuse is a violation of human rights and a serious public health and societal problem that demands our collective attention and action. By working together, we can strive to create a society where all older persons can live free from fear, with dignity, respect, and security.
