World Day for Safety & Health at Work: 28th April
World Day for Safety and Health at Work is observed annually on April 28th. This international campaign, led by the International Labour Organization (ILO), focuses on preventing occupational accidents and diseases globally.
  • 2026 Theme: "Promoting Good Psychosocial Working Environments."
  • Organized by: International Labour Organization (ILO).
  • Significance: Focuses on the right to a safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle.
History and Origin
  • The Trade Union Connection: Since 1996, the trade union movement has observed the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers on this same date to honor victims of workplace accidents.
  • ILO Involvement (2003): The ILO began observing World Day for Safety and Health at Work in 2003 to capitalize on its strengths of "tripartism" (bringing together governments, employers, and workers).
  • Fundamental Right: In June 2022, the International Labour Conference decided to include "a safe and healthy working environment" in the ILO's framework of fundamental principles and rights at work.
The 2026 Theme: Psychosocial Environments
The 2026 focus highlights that workplace safety isn't just about hard hats and machinery; it’s about mental well-being.
  • Psychosocial Risks: These include workplace stress, burnout, bullying, and harassment.
  • Work Design: Evaluating how workload, job security, and organizational culture affect a worker's psychological health.
  • Digital Impact: Addressing the stress caused by constant connectivity, algorithmic management, and remote work isolation.
Why It Matters
  • Human Cost: Approximately 2.9 million workers die each year due to occupational accidents and work-related diseases.
  • Economic Impact: Work-related injuries and illnesses result in an estimated 4% loss of global GDP annually.
  • Emerging Risks: Beyond physical hazards, new risks are emerging from climate change (extreme heat) and rapid digitalization (AI monitoring).
India’s OSH Framework
Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is a vital part of India's labor reforms:
  • The OSH Code (2020): The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code was passed to consolidate 13 central labor laws.
  • Directorate General Factory Advice Service & Labour Institutes (DGFASLI): The technical arm of the Ministry of Labour that helps formulate safety policies for factories and ports.
  • E-Shram Portal: Used to register unorganized workers to ensure they are covered under social security and safety schemes.

Important Facts
  • ILO Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland.
  • Director-General of ILO: Gilbert F. Houngbo (First African to hold the post).
  • Fundamental Conventions: The two primary conventions for OSH are No. 155 (Safety and Health) and No. 187 (Promotional Framework).
  • Workers' Memorial Day: Also observed on April 28th, focusing specifically on mourning those who died on the job.
