Meaning: to give the impression of being something or of having done something, when this may not be true
Synonyms: claim, profess, allege
Antonyms: prove, deny, disclaim
Sentence: The man gave a purported explanation for why he was late, but nobody believed his story.

Meaning: Wild or violent disorder, confusion, or disturbance
