The recruitment process consists of two main stages: a Computer-Based Test (CBT) and a mandatory Shorthand Skill Test.
SSC Stenographer 2026 Exam Pattern

Stage 2: Shorthand Skill Test Structure
Candidates who clear the category-wise cut-off in the CBT are called for the Stenography Skill Test. This stage is strictly qualifying in nature, but mandatory for final selection.
1. The Dictation Phase
You will listen to a speaker and take down shorthand notes on a physical shorthand notepad for 10 minutes:

Grade C Stenographer: Dictation speed of 100 words per minute (WPM).

Grade D Stenographer: Dictation speed of 80 words per minute (WPM).
2. The Computer Transcription Phase
After taking notes, you will move to a computer terminal to type out and transcribe your shorthand notes back into regular text within the following time limits:

# Evaluation Factor: The final merit list is prepared strictly based on your normalized scores in the CBT. However, a high percentage of error mistakes in the shorthand transcription will disqualify you immediately, regardless of your CBT score.
