Om Birla Reconstitutes Parliamentary Committees for 2026–27
In a significant move to ensure robust accountability and legislative scrutiny, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla officially reconstituted four of India’s most vital parliamentary panels for the 2026–27 financial year. These committees—comprising three Financial Committees and one major Standing Committee—serve as the "eyes and ears" of the Parliament, performing deep-dive audits into government spending, policy implementation, and administrative efficiency that are often too technical for the full House to address.
The newly formed committees have officially commenced their one-year tenure, which runs from May 1, 2026, to April 30, 2027.
A Commitment to Continuity
The 2026–27 appointments are characterized by a clear emphasis on continuity and institutional memory. Most notably, the leadership of all four key panels remains unchanged from the previous term. By retaining experienced Chairpersons such as K.C. Venugopal for the Public Accounts Committee and Baijayant "Jay" Panda for the Committee on Public Undertakings, the Speaker has signaled a preference for steady oversight during a period of critical infrastructure and economic policy evaluation.

Important Facts
  • The No-Minister Rule: By law, no Minister of the Union Government can be a member of the PAC, Estimates, or COPU. If a member is appointed as a Minister, they must vacate their seat on the committee.
  • Proportional Representation: Members are elected via a single transferable vote, ensuring that the strength of various political parties in Parliament is reflected within the committees.
  • Continuity: Most chairpersons have been reappointed for this term to ensure ongoing investigations and audits are completed without disruption.
