National Technology Day: May 11
National Technology Day: Celebrating India’s Scientific Excellence
National Technology Day is observed annually in India on May 11. It serves as a tribute to the scientists, engineers, and innovators who have contributed to the country's technological growth and self-reliance.
History and Significance
The day marks three major technological breakthroughs that occurred on May 11, 1998:
-
Operation Shakti (Pokhran-II): India successfully conducted three underground nuclear tests at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. This was followed by two more tests on May 13, making India a full-fledged nuclear-capable nation.
-
Hansa-3 Test Flight: India’s first indigenous aircraft, the Hansa-3, a two-seater light trainer aircraft, took its maiden flight in Bengaluru.
-
Trishul Missile: On the same day, the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) completed the final test fire of the Trishul, a surface-to-air, short-range, quick-reaction missile.
In 1999, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee officially declared May 11 as National Technology Day to commemorate these achievements.
Theme for 2026
The theme for National Technology Day 2026 is "Responsible Innovation and Inclusive Growth."
