National Panchayati Raj Day is celebrated every year on April 24th. It marks the day when the decentralization of power in India was formalized, giving constitutional status to local self-governments in rural areas.

The 73rd Amendment: Although the Act was passed in 1992, it officially came into force on April 24, 1993.

Constitutional Status: This amendment added a new Part IX to the Constitution (titled "The Panchayats") and the 11th Schedule, which contains 29 functional items for Panchayats.

Proclamation: In 2010, the then Prime Minister declared April 24th as National Panchayati Raj Day to honor the "Little Republics" of India.
The Three-Tier System
The Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) consists of three levels to ensure governance reaches the last person:

Gram Panchayat: At the village level.

Panchayat Samiti: At the block/intermediate level.

Zila Parishad: At the district level.

Gram Sabha: The foundation of the system, consisting of all registered voters in a village.

Reservation for Women: The Act mandates at least 1/3rd (33%) reservation for women in all posts (many states like Punjab and Bihar have increased this to 50%).

Fixed Tenure: A five-year term for every Panchayat.

State Election Commission: Created to conduct free and fair elections for local bodies.

State Finance Commission: Appointed every five years to review the financial position of the Panchayats.
