National Memorial Day: 26th May
What is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed annually on the last Monday of May. In 2025, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 26. It is a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring and remembering the military personnel who have died in service to their country, particularly those who lost their lives in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in combat.
While often associated with the unofficial start of summer—with barbecues, parades, and gatherings—its true purpose is to pay tribute to the fallen heroes of the U.S. Armed Forces.
History of Memorial Day
Memorial Day traces its origins back to the aftermath of the American Civil War, which claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and necessitated the establishment of national cemeteries. In the late 1860s, various towns and cities began holding springtime tributes to the war dead, decorating graves with flowers and reciting prayers.
One of the earliest known observances was held in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1865 by formerly enslaved people and Union troops. However, the official beginning of Memorial Day is often attributed to General John A. Logan, who, in 1868, issued a proclamation designating May 30 as "Decoration Day." That year, ceremonies were held at Arlington National Cemetery, where both Union and Confederate soldiers were honored.
How Memorial Day is Observed
Memorial Day is marked by a variety of traditions, both formal and informal, across the United States:
  • National Moment of Remembrance: At 3:00 PM local time, Americans are encouraged to pause for a moment of silence to honor those who have died in military service.
  • Flags and Graves: Volunteers and families place American flags and flowers at the graves of veterans, especially in national cemeteries like Arlington.
  • Parades and Ceremonies: Communities across the country hold parades, often including veterans, active military units, ROTC groups, and marching bands. Memorial services are held at cemeteries, war memorials, and government buildings.
  • Presidential Traditions: The President or Vice President typically lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery in a nationally televised ceremony.
Memorial Day is not just a long weekend or a chance to kick off summer—it is a day of reflection, respect, and remembrance. On May 26, 2025, take a moment to honor the heroes who gave everything for the United States, and consider how you might live in a way that honors their sacrifice.
Let us remember: Freedom is not free.
