As we know every year Labour Day is celebrated in the month of May. This day is totally devoted to the labour class. Because they are the personalities who devote their essential time and efforts to the workstation for better growth of our economy. Hence, They are the foundation of every industry. So they deserve a day which is devoted to them.

Theme: 'Ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate'.

Origin of Labour Day

Many years later, when workers suffered very difficult conditions. They worked very hard in dangerous fields like chemical factories, mines and other similar places for 10-15 hours but were paid very low. The industrialists exploited the labour. They did not hear any problem of labour and forced them to work even though they were not well.  Labourers were very gloomy and they decided to Protest. They wanted to work 8 hours a day and in healthy condition.

Lastly, they took bravely stood united and raised voices against this operation. Nearby, that time founding a trade union and going to strike. It was also considered illegal  in some countries. So they decided to create a trade union and labourers went to strike. Lastly, the government heard their request and reduced working hours to 8 hours. 

History of Labor Day:

Firstly, Labour Day was observed in Chennai on 1st May 1923. The Labour Kisan party of Hindustan initiated this.  In 1886, the Labour Uniion in the United States organised a nationwide strike to demand reduced working hours to 8 hours a day. For the reason that many workers were struggling makes to ends meet and working conditions were often hazardous and unhealthy. In the end, the Finally government approved 8 hours of work and also announced a national holiday on many days or labour days. This was the first time a red flag was hoisted in India.

Significance

  • Workers can often feel ignored, mainly because they do forcefully work or otherwise unhealthy taxing jobs. Labour Day is a day when workers feel respected for the work that they have done all over the year.

  • When they work in an organised and concerned way. Then they feel powerful and also happily work.

  • On the labour day, the workers and their rights are in focus. This day can be a motivation for refining worker’s efforts.

  • This day is important as it enables workers to take some much-needed rest from their work and to collect their thoughts, spend time with their loved ones or just recover their energies.

  • This day motivates people to get to work and to work hard. This will help to keep the economy going. It also encourages men and women to follow their chosen careers and to do their best at them. In this way, they contribute to their society.

Conclusion:

We know that the worker receives minimum pay by selling his own labour. That is the reason why International Labour Day is celebrated all over the world. So this day is to promote and encourage international labor associations. Thus, it is a special day to appreciate and recognize their contribution to society as they are certainly well-deserved.
