International Civil Aviation Day 2024, observed annually on December 7, celebrates aviation’s vital role in fostering global connectivity and driving economic growth. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention), which laid the foundation for modern civil aviation.
Civil Aviation in India began in 1911 with the country's first commercial flight, which carried mail from Allahabad. As part of its vision for the sector, the Indian Government aims to establish 190–200 airports nationwide by 2040. The Ministry of Civil Aviation plays a pivotal role in shaping policies, promoting growth, and regulating civil aviation in India. It oversees airport infrastructure, air traffic services, and ensures compliance with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Additionally, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is tasked with maintaining aviation safety and aligning India with global norms. Its responsibilities include policy formulation, licensing pilots and crew, enforcing safety standards, and certifying aircraft for operations.

The theme is updated every five years on the anniversary of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

ICAO was formed on December 7, 1944, when 52 nations, including India, signed the Chicago Convention. This landmark agreement led to the establishment of ICAO as a specialized United Nations agency dedicated to international aviation cooperation.
