International Archives Day: Protecting Our Collective Memory
Every year on June 9th, the world celebrates International Archives Day, a global observance dedicated to the vital role archives and archivists play in preserving the record of human experience.
The Significance of the Date
The date was chosen to commemorate the founding of the International Council on Archives (ICA), which was established under the auspices of UNESCO on June 9, 1948. The ICA officially designated June 9th as International Archives Day during its annual meeting in Quebec City in 2007, with the first celebration taking place in 2008.
Why Do Archives Matter?
Archives are often mistakenly viewed as "dusty backrooms" filled with forgotten items. In reality, they are living resources that serve as the backbone of transparency, accountability, and cultural identity:
  • Protecting Rights: Archives safeguard essential documents such as land titles, citizenship records, and employment histories, which are crucial for proving legal rights.
  • Government Accountability: By preserving public records, archives allow citizens to hold officials accountable, ensuring that decisions made on their behalf are documented and transparent.
  • Preserving History: From indigenous oral histories and religious manuscripts to contemporary photographs, archives capture the diverse tapestry of human history, preventing the loss of collective memory.
  • Supporting Research: They provide the "raw material" of history, allowing researchers, journalists, and students to trace the truth over time and gain context for modern-day challenges.
The Evolution: From Paper to Digital
In the modern era, the nature of archiving has shifted from physical storage to digital management. While preservation of traditional artifacts remains critical, archivists today manage complex digital infrastructures to ensure that electronic records—which form the majority of today’s information—remain accessible, secure, and authentic for future generations.
How It Is Celebrated
Across the globe, national archives, libraries, and universities mark the occasion with a variety of initiatives:
  • Open Houses: Many institutions host events where the public can view original documents and learn about professional preservation techniques.
  • Digital Exhibitions: Archives frequently launch online showcases of rare or newly digitized collections.
  • International Archives Week: Recognizing the scale of the task, the ICA has expanded the celebration into International Archives Week (often occurring in the second week of June), providing a longer window for institutions to raise awareness and promote the profession.
