First Indian-Origin Turban Clad ' Lord Mayor' of UK 

A local British Sikh councillor based in Coventry has made history for the central England city by becoming its first turban-wearing Lord Mayor.
As an Indian-origin Sikh councilor,Jaswant Singh Birdi's appointment marks a significant milestone in the city’s history. Taking on the role of Lord Mayor also means assuming the position of chairman of the City Council. In his new position, Birdi will serve as the non-political and ceremonial head of Coventry.

Lord mayor is a title of a mayor of what is usually a major city in a Commonwealth realm, with special recognition bestowed by the sovereign.However, the title or an equivalent is present in other countries, including forms such as "high mayor". Aldermen usually elect the lord mayor from their ranks.

Continuing the Legacy of Service

Jaswant Singh Birdi follows in the footsteps of Councillor Keven Maton, whom he served as Deputy Lord Mayor for the past 12 months.
