Origins and Historical Significance
Earth Day was first observed on April 22, 1970, marking the birth of the modern environmental movement. Senator Gaylord Nelson initiated the day to raise awareness about environmental issues and to encourage public participation in environmental protection efforts. The inaugural event saw an estimated 20 million Americans across the United States participating in various activities, including protests, educational events, and clean-up drives .
The success of the first Earth Day led to significant environmental legislation in the U.S., including the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of landmark laws such as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act .
