1.Nicolas Maduro Re-elected as President of Venezuela For 3rd Term
Nicolás Maduro Moros has been re-elected as the President of Venezuela for a third six-year term (2024-2030). He has been in office since April 2013. Maduro won the election with 51% of the vote, while opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia came in second with 44%. Maduro has been a member of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) since 2007.

  • Nicolás Maduro Moros was elected to the Venezuelan Chamber of Deputies in 1998 and to the National Constituent Assembly in 1999.
  • In 2000, he was elected to the National Assembly.
  • Under President Hugo Chávez, Maduro served as President of the National Assembly (2005-2006), Minister of Foreign Affairs (2006-2012), and Vice President (2012-2013).
  • After Chávez's death on March 5, 2013, Maduro became President of Venezuela.
  • He was formally elected President in April 2013 and re-elected for a second term in 2018.

2. 3 Indian Destinations Listed in TIME’s ‘World’s Greatest Places of 2024’

3. Government Launched Vaccination Portal ‘U-WIN’ For Pregnant Women & Children
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) launched ‘U-WIN’, an online portal for managing vaccinations. It tracks the vaccination records of all pregnant women and children up to 6 years under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP).

5. RBI selected 5 firms under 5th cohort of RS on the Theme ‘Neutral’
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has chosen 5 out of 22 applicants for the Test Phase of the 5th cohort of the Regulatory Sandbox (RS) with the theme 'Neutral.' These entities will start testing their products in August 2024. The 5th cohort was announced in September 2022.

6. Manu and Sarabjot achieve a historic win by securing the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event
Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh won a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event at the Paris Olympics, defeating South Korea 16-10. This achievement makes Bhaker the first Indian female athlete to win two medals in a single Olympics.

7. Jia Rai: Youngest and fastest para-swimmer to cross the English Channel
Sixteen-year-old Jiya Rai from Mumbai has set a world record as the youngest and fastest para-swimmer to cross the English Channel. Despite having Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jiya completed the 34-kilometer swim from Abbot’s Cliff in England to Pointe de la Courte-Dune in France in 17 hours and 25 minutes on July 28-29, 2024.

  • She swam the 29-kilometer distance from Talaimannar, Sri Lanka, to Dhanuskodi, India.

8. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton won the Belgian Grand Prix 2024
British racing driver Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes won the 2024 Formula 1 Rolex Belgian Grand Prix, held at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Stavelot, Belgium. This marks Hamilton’s 2nd GP title of 2024 after the Great Britain GP held in July 2024.  McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, (Australia) secured the 2nd place on the podium and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc (Monaco) moved up to the 3rd position.

  • Mercedes' George Russell, who initially finished first, was disqualified due to his car being underweight.
  • The FIA reported that 2.8 liters of fuel were improperly drained from Russell’s car after it had initially met the minimum weight limit.
  • The car’s actual weight was 796.5 kg, below the required minimum of 798.0 kg.
9. Indian Army Launches E-SeHAT Tele-Consultancy for Veterans
The Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) has launched the E-SeHAT module. This new service allows ECHS beneficiaries to get online medical consultations from home, avoiding trips to ECHS Polyclinics. E-SeHAT provides structured video consultations to improve healthcare delivery for veterans by offering timely and quality care remotely.

  • The pilot phase of E-SeHAT has begun at 12 ECHS Polyclinics, including remote locations like Baramulla, Imphal, Churachandpur, Dimapur, and Aizawl.
  • The project has successfully held tele-consultations with beneficiaries in these areas.
  • The full nationwide rollout of E-SeHAT is planned for November 2024.
10. Rigoberta Menchú Tum & Victor Gonzalez Torres Receives Gandhi Mandela Award 2020
Rigoberta Menchú Tum, the Nobel Prize winner and Guatemalan human rights activist, and Victor Gonzalez Torres, a Mexican politician and businessman, received the Gandhi Mandela Award 2020. The award was presented on Nelson Mandela’s 106th birthday, July 18, 2024.

  • Rigoberta Menchú Tum became an activist for women’s rights and social reform through the Catholic Church.
  • In 1979, she joined the Committee of the Peasant Union (CUC) to advocate for farm workers’ rights and educate Indigenous peasants.
  • Her activism led to her exile in Mexico in 1981, where she co-founded the United Representation of the Guatemalan Opposition (RUOG) in 1982.
  • Her autobiography, I, Rigoberta Menchú, published in 1983, gained international attention.
  • She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for her efforts in social justice and reconciliation and received the Princess of Asturias Award in 1998.
