1. Missile Park ‘Agneeprastha’ and  2 MW Solar Power Plant inaugurated at INS Kalinga

  • The foundation stone for a Missile Park named ‘Agneeprastha’ was laid by Commodore Rajesh Debnath & a 2 MegaWatt(MW) solar photovoltaic plant was commissioned by Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command(ENS) at INS Kalinga, Visakhapatnam.
  • A 2MW plant was commissioned in line with the initiative of the Union government to promote solar power and an objective to achieve 100 GigaWatt(GW) of solar power by 2022 as part of the National Solar Mission.
  • Agneeprastha aims to capture glimpses of Missile History of INS Kalinga since its inception in 1981.

2. Ajay Bhushan Pandey represented India at BRICS Heads of Tax Authorities meeting  through video conferencing

  • The meeting of the Heads of Tax Authorities of the BRICS countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa was held.
  • The meeting was hosted by the Federal Tax Service of Russia, which currently holds the BRICS Presidency, to discuss the response of BRICS Tax Authorities to the COVID-19 pandemic and to explore potential areas of cooperation in tax matters.
  • The meeting was scheduled to be held in Moscow, but was held through video conference in view of COVID-19.

3. MP Govt launches 'Rojgar Setu Yojana' to employ migrant workers

  • The Madhya Pradesh Government has created 'Rojgar Setu Yojana' to employ migrant workers, who have come back to the State from other states amid coronavirus-induced lockdown. The State Government is preparing details after surveying skilled labourers.
  • With the help of this description, they will be provided employment in small, cottage industries or factories. The Swamitva Scheme is now being implemented in the state too.
  • Under this scheme, the survey of the entire rural population will be done, then the records will be prepared and people will be given ownership rights over their lands.
  • The Swamitva Scheme was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Panchayati Raj Day 2020.
  • The Scheme will ensure the demarcation of inhabited land in rural areas with the use of the latest surveying methods including the drones.

4. SAI Director General Sandip Pradhan's tenure extended by two years

  • The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has extended the tenure of Sandip Pradhan as Director General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) by two years.
  • The extended tenure will come into effect from 6 June 2020.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for extension.

5. Venkataramani Sumantran becomes new independent director of Indigo  

  • Venkataramani Sumantran has been appointed the independent director of airline company IndiGo. 
  • He presently served as the chairman and managing director of Chennai-based Celeris Technologies. 
  • He also served as an adjunct professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is on several statutory and advisory boards in India, Europe and the US.
  • He will hold the post for the next five years.

6. Indian long-distance runner Kiranjeet Kaur banned for 4 years after being tested positive for doping

  • Long-distance runner Kiranjeet Kaur, who won the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K among the Indians last year, has been handed a four-year ban by World Athletics' anti-doping body for returning positive for a banned substance in a test conducted in Doha.
  • The National Dope Testing Laboratory has been under suspension from the World Anti-Doping Agency and so Kaur's samples were tested in the WADA accredited laboratory in Doha.
  • The 32-year-old Kaur will be stripped of the top prize she won at the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K.
  • Her ban period has begun from 15 December, the date of in-competition sample collection.

7. Lieutenant General Manoj Pande takes over as Commander-In-Chief of Andaman & Nicobar Command

  • Lieutenant General Manoj Pande, AVSM, VSM, will take over as the15th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN) on 01 Jun 2020. An alumnus of National Defence Academy, the General Officer was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers) in December 1982. 
  • He is a graduate of Staff College, Camberley (United Kingdom) and attended the Higher Command Course at Army War College, Mhow and National Defence College (NDC) at Delhi.
  •  During his 37 years of distinguished service, the General Officer has taken active part in Operation Vijay and Parakram. He commanded an Engineer Regiment along the Line of Control in Jammu & Kashmir, an Engineer Brigade as part of the Strike Corps, an Infantry Brigade along the Line of Control, a Mountain Division in High Altitude Area of Western Ladakh and a Corps deployed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) as also in Counter Insurgency Operations area in the North East.

8. SN Rajeshwari appointed as new CMD of Oriental Insurance

  • The Banks Board Bureau (BBB) appointed SN Rajeshwari as the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Delhi-based Oriental Insurance Company (OIC). She will be the successor of AV Girija Kumar, 60 years old, who retires on May 2020.
    The BBB had conducted virtual interviews of five senior general managers of the public sector general insurance company, with 2 years of residual services till May 2022, to select a new CMD of Oriental Insurance.
  • She is a 1983 batch officer from United India Insurance (UII), who currently serves as the GM (General Manager) and CFO (Chief Financial Officer) of New India Insurance, Mumbai. Rajeshwari will serve as the CMD of OIC till May 2022.

9. International Everest Day: 29th May

  • International Everest Day is being observed on 29th May.
  • On this day Nepalese Tenzing Norgay and New Zealand’s Edmund Hillary had climbed the Mt. Everest  in 1953, as the first humans to achieve the feat.
  • Nepal decided to observe the day as International Everest Day since 2008 when the legendary climber Hillary passed away.
  • The day is celebrated with memorial events, processions, and special events in Kathmandu and the Everest region.

10. Rajya Sabha member and Mathrubhumi Chief MP Veerendra Kumar passes away

  • Rajya Sabha MP Veerendra Kumar passed away at the age of 84 in Kozhikode due to cardiac arrest.
  • Kumar was the Managing Director of the leading Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi.
  • He was born to Marudevi Avva and Padmaprabha Gowder, a leader of Socialist Party on July 22, 1936, in Kalpetta. He was also arrested during the Emergency.
  • In 1996, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kozhikode constituency and served as Minister of State (MoS) for Labour and later Finance.
