Dr. Narayanan served as the head of the Department of History at the University of Calicut from 1976 to 1990 and was the Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) from 2001 to 2003. He was known for his empirical approach to history, emphasizing the use of inscriptions and literature to understand the past. His contributions have left a lasting impact on Indian historiography, and he is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
