1. Rajesh Kannan Joins Tata Motors As President And CDIO
  • Tata Motors has appointed Rajesh Kannan as their President and Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO). The company, in an exchange filing, announced that Kannan will take charge effective from 1 August 2023.
  • Kannan is currently working with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Limited. In his new role, he will be moving from TCS to Tata Motors. The recommendation for the new position came from the members of the nomination and remuneration committee. Kannan has an experience of over two decades in delivering transformative, end-to-end digital and IT engagements for global firms working across several sectors and industries such as retail, consumer products, media and advertising, banking, insurance and financial services.

2. Missile Man of India’ APJ Abdul Kalam death anniversary is observed on 27th July
  • 27th July is celebrated as death anniversary of Missile Man of India APJ Abdul Kalam. The 'Missile Man of India', Dr APJ Abdul Kalam or Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on October 15th, 1931 in Tamil Nadu and the day of October 15 is also celebrated as World's Students Day.
  • The main reason for being the 'Missile Man in India' is his contributions towards the growth of the country and the programs related to India's Missile and nuclear weapons. APJ Kalam made many new innovations in the sector of science and technology with his passion for the field. 27th July 2023 is celebrated as 8th death anniversary of APJ Abdul Kalam.

3. IMF raises India's FY24 GDP growth forecast by 20 basis points to 6.1%
  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) raised the FY24 economic growth forecast for India by 20 basis points to 6.1 per cent, citing the country’s stronger-than-expected growth momentum in the March quarter of FY23.
  • The International Monetary Fund has revised the growth forecast of India's gross domestic product to 6.1% for the current fiscal. The 0.2 percentage point upward revision as compared with the April projection reflects momentum from stronger domestic investments last year, according to the latest edition of the IMF's World Economic Outlook. Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, chief economist and director of the research department at the IMF.

4. 3rd edition of Summit on “Global Chemicals and Petrochemicals Manufacturing Hubs in India” to be held at New Delhi
  • The  Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers in association with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) is organizing the 3rd edition of the Summit on “Global Chemicals and Petrochemicals Manufacturing Hubs in India” (GCPMH 2023) on 27th – 28th July 2023 at New Delhi.
  • Union Minister of Finance Smt. Nirmala Sitaraman will inaugurate the two days Summit on Chemicals and Petrochemicals Manufacturing Hubs 2023. Senior Officers of Central Ministries/Departments, Senior Captains of the Industry, Academicians, Policy makers and others with interest in the emerging opportunities in the Indian Chemical & Petrochemical Industry will also present on this occasion.

5. Amit Shah will launch the “Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar” initiative as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • The Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah will launch a unique initiative ‘Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar’ as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. It is a pan-India initiative of the Ministry of Culture under the National Mission on Cultural Mapping. Shri Amit Shah will officially launch the virtual platform during a grand projection mapping show at the Qutub Minar.
  • The virtual platform https://mgmd.gov.in will connect people with villages of India. The Ministry of Culture initiated the ‘Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar’ (MGMD) project under National Mission on Cultural Mapping in coordination with Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). The main objective of the project is to culturally map India’s 6.5 lakh villages, spanning 29 States and 7 Union Territories, on a comprehensive virtual platform.

6. Tata Steel re-appoints TV Narendran as MD & CEO for five years
  • Tata Steel has reappointed TV Narendran as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director for a period of five years from September 19, 2023 to September 18, 2028. The decision was taken on the basis of the recommendation of the 'Nomination and Remuneration Committee'.
  • TV Narendran has an impressive career span of 34 years in the mining and metals industry and has held various key positions in Tata Steel. He has been a member of the board of Tata Steel Limited and has served as the chairman of both Tata Steel Europe and Tata Steel Long Products Limited. In addition to his role as CEO and MD of Tata Steel, Narendran holds important chairmanship positions in other subsidiaries and associates of Tata Steel.

7. Canara Bank was top lender to public sector cos in FY23
  • In a remarkable achievement, Canara Bank has once again emerged as the leading public sector bank in lending to state-owned corporations and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for the fifth consecutive year.
  • The Finance Ministry, in response to queries raised by MP Velusamy P, disclosed that Canara Bank’s lending to government-backed entities reached an impressive 187,813 crore during the fiscal year 2022-23 (FY23). This amount represented an 11% increase compared to the previous fiscal, wherein the bank disbursed 1,69,532 crore to government entities.

8. Asian Paints appoints R Seshasayee as Chairman from October 1
  • Asian Paints on July 25 announced that it has appointed R Seshasayee as the Chairman of the board of directors of the company with effect from October 1, 2023, and he will continue in this position until the end of his tenure on January 22, 2027. Seshasayee will succeed the current Chairman, Deepak Satwalekar, whose term is scheduled to end on September 30.
  • R Seshasayee, a Chartered Accountant, embarked on his professional journey with Hindustan Lever Ltd in 1971. During his tenure at Ashok Leyland Limited, he held several significant roles, serving as the Managing Director from 1998 to 2011, followed by Executive Vice Chairman from 2011 to 2013, and subsequently as the Non-Executive Vice Chairman from 2013 to 2016.

9. Twitter Launches New ‘X’ Logo to Replace Blue Bird
  • Twitter owner Elon Musk has launched a new logo – the single letter “X” to replace the social media service’s famous blue bird as part of a broader rebranding effort. Twitter’s official account now reads “X”, with a black background and the letter X in a white design. The latest change is one in a series Musk has carried out since buying Twitter for $44 billion last year.
  • Musk’s Twitter purchase and rebranding effort are seen as steps toward his stated plans to create what he has called an “everything app.” Such an app would be similar to China’s WeChat, which combines video, messaging, streaming and payments.

10. Aditya Samant becomes India’s 83rd Grandmaster at Biel Chess Festival
  • Aditya Samant, hailing from Maharashtra, achieved the title of India’s 83rd Grandmaster by obtaining his third GM norm during the Master Tournament (MTO) at the Biel International Chess Festival.
  • His journey began with his first GM norm earned at the Abu Dhabi Masters in August 2022, followed by securing his second GM norm at the 3rd El Llobregat Open in December of the same year.
