1. Kaamya Karthikeyan becomes youngest Indian to scale Mt Everest
  • Sixteen-year-old Kaamya Karthikeyan has become the youngest Indian mountaineer to scale the Mt Everest from the Nepal side. She also becomes the second youngest girl in the world to achieve this feat.
  • Kaamya has completed six milestones in her mission to summit the highest peak of all seven continents and aims to climb Mt. Vinson Massif in Antarctica this December to become the youngest girl to accomplish the ‘7summits challenge'. Supported by the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF), Kaamya’s father Commodore S Karthikeyan of the Indian Navy accompanied her on the expedition.She is targeting the Vinson Massif in Antarctica this December.
2. Australia and Uzbekistan confirmed as 2026 and 2029 AFC Women’s Asian CuP hosts
  • Australia and Uzbekistan have been confirmed as the hosts of the 2026 and 2029 editions of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup™ respectively after the AFC Executive Committee today ratified the AFC Women’s Football Committee’s recommendations at its third meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand, on the eve of the 34th AFC Congress.
  • The AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 will feature 12 top women’s national football teams from the continent. The teams will be divided into three groups of four each, with matches being played across the host states of New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia.

3. Logistics Startup Porter’s becomes India’s 3rd Unicorn in 2024
  • Logistics startup Porter has become the third unicorn this year, following an internal funding round where friends and family purchased shares directly from the company’s employee stock ownership plan, according to sources familiar with the matter.
  • Moneycontrol was the first to report the news, which said 15-20 individuals bought shares worth Rs 25 crore in the company, at a valuation of above $1 billion. Earlier this year, fintech firm Perfios and Ola’s AI venture Krutrim had turned unicorns. As per Tracxn, there were 113 unicorns in India as of earlier this month.
4. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport gets certification for waste management
  • Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has achieved the zero waste to landfill (ZWL) certification by the Confederation of Indian Industry Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development (CII-ITC). The ZWL assessment verified that Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has implemented the best waste management practices and achieved a 99.50% waste diversion from landfill.
  • The goal of zero waste to landfill is to divert at least 99% of generated waste from landfills while reducing the amount of waste generated. The assessment of ZWL practices at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport was conducted for the financial year 2022-2023. The main sources of waste generation at the site were paper waste, cutlery waste, food waste, and road waste, which contributed most to the municipal solid waste.
5. Delhi Ranks 350 In Oxford Global Cities Index Report 2024
  • Delhi has achieved the best ranking among Indian cities in the 2024 Oxford Economics Global Cities Index, positioned at 350th. This index analyzes the global standing of 1,000 cities based on several pivotal categories. The index contains five categories: Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment, and Governance, which are aggregated to create an overall score for each city.
  • New York ranks first on the index, followed by London, San Jose, Tokyo, Paris, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Melbourne and Zurich. In India, Bengaluru is ranked 411, Mumbai 427, Chennai 472, Kochi 521, Kolkata 528, Pune 534, Thrissur 550, Hyderabad 564 and Kozhikode 580. South Indian cities appear to be ranked higher on the list.
6. Vietnam Communist party names security minister as president
  • Vietnam's Communist Party has named police minister To Lam president, the government said Saturday, and nominated a new head of the parliament in a major leadership reshuffle.
  • Unprecedentedly for a one-party nation once known for its stable politics, two state presidents and a parliament speaker have stepped down in less than 18 months, all for unspecified "wrongdoing" amid a major antigraft campaign that is unnerving foreign investors because of its chilling effect on bureaucracy. After approval from parliament, which could come next week, Lam, 66, will replace Vo Van Thuong, who stepped down in March after being accused of violating party rules, just over a year after his appointment.

7. 10th World Water Forum opens in Indonesia's Bali
  • The 10th under the theme of "Water for Shared Prosperity" officially opened on Indonesia's island of Bali. A number of country leaders and United Nations representatives attended the official opening ceremony.
  • The 10th World Water Forum focused on four topics, namely water conservation, clean water and sanitation, food and energy security, and mitigation of natural disasters. Indonesian President Joko Widodo said in his opening remarks that in 2050, 500 million small farmers who contribute 80 percent of the world's food are predicted to be most vulnerable to drought.

8. ‘Let’s Move India’ Campaign Celebrates Olympians Bound for Paris
  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has kickstarted the 'Let's Move, India' campaign. This nationwide initiative invites citizens across age groups and abilities to embrace the sheer joy of movement. Indians can showcase their support for the country's athletes bound for Paris 2024 by recreating iconic celebrations or crafting unique physical expressions.
  • The IOC has joined hands with Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra's foundation and the Reliance Foundation. Together, they will extend invitations to schools nationwide to partake in the Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP), coinciding with Olympic Day on June 23.
9. Jenny Erpenbeck’s ‘Kairos’ Wins the International Booker Prize
  • Jenny Erpenbeck’s “Kairos,” a novel about a torrid love affair in the final years of East Germany, won the International Booker Prize, the renowned award for fiction translated into English. The book, which tells the story of a tangled love affair during the final years of East Germany’s existence, beat out five other finalists from a pool of 149 submitted novels.
  • The International Booker Prize recognizes fiction from around the world that has been translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland. The £50,000 ($64,000) prize money is divided equally between the author and the translator, celebrating their collaborative efforts in bringing literary masterpieces to a wider audience.
10. Shrinivas R. Kulkarni wins 2024 Shaw Prize in Astronomy
  • Indian American professor Shrinivas R. Kulkarni has been awarded the 2024 Shaw Prize in Astronomy for his ground-breaking discoveries about millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other variable or transient astronomical objects.
  • Kulkarni, George Ellery Hale Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Science, Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology, USA, was recognized with three others on May 21 by Hong Kong-based Shaw Prize Foundation.
