1. UN appoints Indian economist Jayati Ghosh to high-level advisory board on multilateralism
  • Indian development economist Jayati Ghosh has been appointed by UN Secretary- General Antonio Guterres to a new high-level advisory board on effective multilateralism.
  • Ghosh, 66, is a Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She was previously a professor of economics and chairperson of the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University. She is also a member of the UN's high-level Advisory Board on Economic and Social Affairs.
  • UN chief Guterres announced the establishment of the Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism to be co-chaired by former Liberian president and Nobel laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and former Swedish prime minister Stefan Lofven.

2. 21st March observed as International Day of Forests
  • The International Day of Forests (also known as World Forestry Day) is celebrated every year on March 21. The main aim of the day is to raise awareness of the significance of all types of forests. The day is to celebrate to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests, and trees outside forests, for the benefit of current and future generations as well as to increase the public awareness among communities about the values, significance and contributions of the forests to balance the life cycle on the earth.
  • The theme for 2022 is “Forests and sustainable production and consumption.”
History of the day:
  • The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests (IDF) in 2012. The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree-planting campaigns.
  • The theme for each International Day of Forests is chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests.
3. Bangladesh-US hold 8th Partnership Dialogue in Dhaka
  • US and Bangladesh held 8th partnership dialogue in Dhaka for a range of issues encompassing political, economic, and security domains during the partnership dialogue.
  • Bangladesh and the US discussed ways and means to enhance trade and investment and possible cooperation in the blue economy.
  • They also exchanged views on the Indo-pacific strategy.
  • Bangladesh shared its perspectives on national, regional, and global security and geopolitical scenarios with the US side

4. Shankar Prasad Sharma appointed as new Nepal envoy to India
  • Shankar Prasad Sharma has been appointed as the Ambassador to India by President of Nepal Bidya Devi Bhandari
  • He has been appointed as per the recommendation of Council of Ministers in line with Article 282 of the Constitution of Nepal.
  • Post of Nepal’s envoy in New Delhi was vacant after Ambassador Nilambar Acharya, was recalled 6 months ago
  • Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia and is mainly situated in Himalayas, including Mount Everest, highest point on Earth

5. NITI Aayog to Organize 5th Edition of Women Transforming India Awards
  • NITI Aayog’s Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) is organizing 5th edition of the Women Transforming India Awards (WTI).
  • WTI Awards will be conferred on 75 women achievers to celebrate their contribution towards ‘Sashakt Aur Samarth Bharat’
  • Awards will be given by an equally exceptional group of women: Kiran Bedi, Lakshmi Puri, Tessy Thomas, Arundhati Bhattacharya, Debjani Ghosh, Ila Arun, Salma Sultan, Sangeeta Reddy, Shivani Malik
  • It will be conferred in 7 categories

6. Charles Leclerc wins F1 Bahrain Grand Prix 2022
  • Monaco’s Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) has won the Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix 2022 at the Bahrain International Circuit.
  • It was his first victory since the 2019 Italian Grand Prix.
  • He was followed by Carlos Sainz Jr. (Ferrari – Spain), who came second, and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes-Great Britain).
  • This was the first Formula One race of 2022 and was the eighteenth edition of the Bahrain Grand Prix.
7. Suresh Raina felicitated with ‘Sports Icon’ award at Maldives Sports Awards
  • Former Indian cricketer, Suresh Raina has been awarded with the prestigious ‘Sports Icon’ award at the Maldives Sports Awards 2022.
  • He has been felicitated for his achievements throughout his career.
  • He was nominated alongside 16 international sportspersons, including former Real Madrid player Roberto Carlos, Jamaican Sprinter Asafa Powell, former Sri Lankan captain and cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya and Dutch football legend Edgar Davids among others
8. Pankaj Advani wins Asian Billiards title for 8th time
  • Indian cueist Pankaj Advani has defeated Dhruv Sitwala to win his eighth title at the 19th Asian 100 UP Billiards Championship 2022. It was held in Doha, Qatar.
  • Overall this is Advani’s 24th international title and 8th Asian crown.
9. PM Modi, Morrison to hold second India-Australia virtual summit
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart, Scott Morrison, will hold a virtual summit where they will review the progress on various initiatives under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The first India-Australia virtual summit was held on June 4, 2020, when the relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
  • PM Modi and Morrison are expected to commit closer cooperation in trade, critical minerals, migration and mobility, and education, with Canberra set to announce investments worth a total of ₹1,500 crore (Aus$ 280 million). According to Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders will also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

10. Nagaland becomes first paperless Assembly by implementing National e-Vidhan Application programme
  • Nagaland on Saturday created history by becoming the first State Assembly in the country to implement the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) programme to become completely paperless.
  • The Nagaland Assembly Secretariat has attached a tablet or e-book on each table in the 60 members' assembly amid the ongoing Budget session.
