1. Hindustan Zinc becomes 3rd largest silver producer globally
  • Hindustan Zinc, Sindesar Khurd Mine in Rajasthan now stands as the world's second-largest silver-producing mine. The company has a market share of 75% of the growing zinc market in India with its headquarters in Udaipur.
  • Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company in zinc, lead and silver businesses, is the world's second largest integrated zinc producer and now the third largest silver producer.
2. Nigeria is the first country to get vaccine for meningitis
  • Nigeria has taken a step forward in global health by being the first country to implement a new World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended vaccine, Men5CV, targeting 5 strains of the meningococcus bacteria.
  • This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat meningitis, particularly in Africa's "Meningitis Belt," where Nigeria is among the 26 hyper-endemic countries. The roll-out began amid an outbreak that resulted in 153 deaths from over 1,700 suspected cases in several Nigerian states.
3.Odisha did DRDO flight test the Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM) in April 2024
  • DRDO conducted a successful test flight of the Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha. The missile showcased excellent performance, closely monitored by various sensors and the Indian Air Force.
  • During the test, all subsystems of the missile performed as expected, showcasing reliability and efficiency.  The flight path of the missile was meticulously monitored by a range of sensors including Radar, Electro-Optical Tracking System (EOTS), and Telemetry, ensuring comprehensive coverage.

4. RBI imposes Rs 60.3 lakh penalty on five co-operative banks
  • A penalty of Rs 43.30 lakh has been imposed on Rajkot Nagarik Sahakari Bank for non-compliance with RBI directions.
  • Penalty of Rs 5 lakh  each  on The Kangra Co-operative Bank (New Delhi), Rajdhani Nagar Sahkari Bank (Lucknow), and Zila Sahakari Bank, Garhwal (Kotdwar, Uttarakhand). A penalty of Rs 2 has been imposed on District Co-operative Bank (Dehradun).

5. India to deliver 1st batch of BrahMos missiles to Philippines
  • The two countries signed a deal worth almost $375 million to equip the Philippine Marines with three batteries of missiles. This is the first export order for the BrahMos missile developed by India and Russia.
  • India has set a defense export target of ₹35,000 crore by 2024-25. India’s defence exports grew 32.5% last fiscal and crossed the ₹21,000-crore mark for the first time.

6. Rohit Sharma becomes 2nd player to play 250th game in IPL
  • The match against PBKS in Chandigarh was Rohit's 250th in the Indian Premier League. He became the only 2nd player in the league's rich history to reach the mark after Chennai Super Kings' legend Mahendra Dhoni.
  • Dinesh Karthik (249) and Virat Kohli (244). Rohit also reached 6500 runs in the IPL, becoming the only fourth batter. MI opener Rohit Sharma became only the second player in the history of the Indian Premier League to appear in 250 games.
7. India’s Electronics Exports Surge to $29.12 Billion in FY24
  • India’s electronics industry experienced a notable surge in exports, reaching $29.12 billion in fiscal year 2023-24, a substantial 23.6% increase from the previous year. This growth is particularly significant amid an overall contraction of the country’s total exports by 3%.
  • Commerce department officials identified the United States, United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Italy as the top five export markets for Indian electronics goods.
8. Varanasi’s Tiranga Barfi and Dhalua Murti Metal Casting Craft Receive GI Tag
  • In a significant development, two iconic products from the historic city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, have been granted the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) status. On April 16, 2024, the GI Registry Office based in Chennai announced that the Tiranga Barfi of Varanasi and the Dhalua Murti Metal Casting Craft have been included in the prestigious GI category.
  • Steeped in the rich history of India’s independence movement, the Tiranga Barfi holds a special place in the hearts of Varanasi’s residents. During the struggle for freedom, this tricolored sweetmeat was ingeniously crafted to facilitate secret meetings and information exchange among revolutionaries.
9. GMR Hyderabad International Airport Receives Skytrax Award for ‘Best Airport Staff’
  • GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) has been honored with the ‘Best Airport Staff in India & South Asia 2024’ award by Skytrax. The announcement took place during the Passenger Terminal EXPO 2024 in Frankfurt, Germany, on April 17.
