1. HDFC Bank breaks into $100 billion market-cap club as world’s 7th largest lender
- HDFC Bank, the largest private lender in the country, has
achieved a new milestone of entering the $100 billion market-capitalisation club after its reverse merger with its parent HDFC Ltd.
- However, on the Indian bourses, HDFC Bank still lags behind oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), sitting on the third position with a market cap of 12.43 lakh crore. This accomplishment came after its reverse merger with its parent company, HDFC Ltd. Despite this achievement, the bank currently ranks third on the Indian stock exchanges, trailing behind Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

2. India and Indonesia announce launch of the “India – Indonesia Economic and Financial Dialogue”
- The India-Indonesia Economic and Financial Dialogue
launched on 16 July, 2023 will focus on enhancing bilateral trade and investment, financial services, and infrastructure development, among others.
- Announcing the launch of the Dialogue, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said it can play an instrumental role in reaching a common understanding on issues and taking forward the global agenda from the perspective of the emerging market and developing economies.

3. International Justice Day is observed on July 17
- The day focuses on promoting international criminal justice
and advocating for the rights of victims. It commemorates the adoption of the Rome Statute on 17 July 1998, which established the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC is tasked with protecting individuals from heinous crimes such as genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of aggression.
- The primary mission of the ICC is to ensure justice and accountability for these heinous crimes, thus contributing to global peace, security and prosperity. Global participation: People around the world come together on this day to support justice, raise awareness of international criminal justice, and cooperate in preventing future crimes.
- Theme: “Overcoming Barriers and Unleashing Opportunities for Social Justice”.

4. Rajasthan cabinet gives approval to ‘Minimum Guaranteed Income Bill’
- The Rajasthan Government has announced the minimum
income guarantee to provide social security to citizens of Rajasthan. The Rajasthan government plans to bring a law that promises ‘guaranteed minimum income’ for the poor.
- With this scheme, all families in the state will be able to get an employment guarantee of 125 days every year, and a minimum pension of 1,000 per month in case of aged /disabled/single women. For this, an additional expenditure of 2500 crore is being proposed. The Rajasthan government provides social security pension to around 10 million beneficiaries at an annual expenditure of 9,000 crore. The central government provides 300 crore annually for pensions of up to Rs.300 per month to 1 million people in the state.

5. A Memorandum of Understanding was inked to create IIT Delhi’s first campus in Abu Dhabi
- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed
between the Ministry of Education and Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) to establish 1st campus of IIT Delhi in Abu Dhabi.
- The signing took place in the presence of HE Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India. The MoU was signed by HE Mubarak Hamad Al Mheiri, ADEK Under Secretary, Shri Sunjay Sudhir, Indian Ambassador to the UAE and Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.

7. HDFC Bank Becomes 1st to Link Digital Rupee With UPI QR Code
- HDFC Bank has launched Unified Payments Interface Quick
Response Code (UPI QR code) interoperable with India’s sovereign digital currency, Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). With this, HDFC Bank became one of the first banks in the country to complete the integration process.
- At present, HDFC Bank facilitates payments in Digital Rupee across Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh, Bhubaneshwar, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Indore, Bhopal, Lucknow, Patna, Kochi, Goa, Shimla, Jaipur, Chennai, Kolkata, Ranchi, Pune, Nagpur, Varanasi, Visakhapatnam, Pondicherry, and Vijayawada.

8. India third with 27 medals in Asian Athletics Championships 2023
- In the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 held in Bangkok,
Thailand, India won a total of 27 medals and secured the third position in the competition. In the five-day (July 12 to 16) Asian Athletics Championships 2023 held in Bangkok, India finished third with a total of 27 medals, including six gold, twelve silver and nine bronze medals, in the second best ever performance.
- Athlete Jyoti Yaraji won India's first gold medal in women's 100m race and silver medal in women's 200m race in this championship. Indian athletes won a total of 13 medals including 8 silver and 5 bronze medals on the last day of competition in Bangkok Athletics Championships 2023 on July 16. India's Bangkok campaign was India's best performance at the Asian Championships since Bhubaneswar 2017.

- A book titled “India Rising Memoir of a Scientist” authored by
R. Chidambaram and Suresh Gangotra. The book looks at the life of one of India’s foremost scientists, Dr R. Chidambaram, who served as principal scientific advisor (PSA) to the Government of India and as chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet (SAC-C) from November 2001 to March 2018.
- As one of India’s most distinguished experimental physicists, Dr Chidambaram has made outstanding contributions to many aspects of basic science and nuclear technology.

10. Eminent mathematician Dr Mangala Narlikar passes away at 80
- Eminent mathematician and scientist Dr Mangala Narlikar, wife
of noted astrophysicist Dr Jayant Narlikar, passed away at her residence in Maharashtra’s Pune city after a prolonged illness, her family members said. She was 80. Narlikar had been battling cancer for the past few months, her daughter said.
- Dr Mangala Narlikar carried out research in pure mathematics. She initially worked at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai before joining as a lecturer at Bombay and Pune universities. Her core fields of interest were real and complex analysis, analytic geometry, number theory, algebra and topology.
