1. International Nurse Day is observed globally on 12 May every year.

  • This day is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale. 
  • She was the founder of modern nursing and was a British social reformer and statistician.
  • 2020 theme: “Nursing the World to Health”. 
  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) has designated the year 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.

2. MP Home Minister launches the country's first-ever 'FIR Aapke Dwar' Yojana

  • Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Dr Narottam Mishra launched the country's first-ever 'FIR AapkeDwarYojana' in Bhopal.
  • Madhya Pradesh is the first state in the country to implement such an innovative scheme. 
  • 'FIR Aapke Dwar' scheme has been started as a pilot project in 23 Police Stations including one urban and one rural Police Station at 11 Divisional Headquarters.
  • Dial 100 vehicle would have trained Head Constables to lodge FIR. FIRs in complaints of general nature will be lodged on the spot.

3. Atal Pension Yojana completes five years, achieves 2.23 Crore enrolment

  • Atal Pension Yojana (APY) completed five years of its implementation on 9 May 2020. The scheme has achieved the milestone of 2.23 subscribers so far.
  • APY was launched on 9 May 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The aim of the scheme is to deliver old age income security, particularly to the workers in the unorganized sector. The scheme still remains relevant for addressing the challenges of the rapidly increasing aging population of India.
  • The scheme provides a minimum guaranteed pension ranging from Rs.1,000 to Rs.5,000 on attaining 60 years of age. The amount of pension is guaranteed for a lifetime to the spouse on the death of the subscriber. In the event of the death of both the subscriber and the spouse, the entire pension corpus is paid to the nominee.

4. Narinder Batra’s term as FIH President extended until May 2021

  • The International Hockey Federation(FIH) announced that it has extended the terms of its president Narinder Dhruv Batra & the Executive Board(EB) members which is due to end in October 2020 has been extended until the 47th FIH Congress(initially planned on 28th October- 1st November 2020 in New Delhi) in May 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The subsequent terms for the positions will be shortened accordingly(mid-2021 to 2024) on an exceptional basis.
  • The decision made is based on Article 12.1 of the FIH Statutes, which covers cases of force majeure.
  • The FIH has pre-informed 137 National Associations in April about the change of dates for the Congress.
  • EB members who got extensions are:  Women-  Danae Andrada(Uruguayan), Hazel Kennedy (Zambia), Men- Erik Cornelissen (Netherlands) and TayyabI kram ( Macao).

5. Government extends last date for receipt of Gandhi Peace Prize-2020 nominations up to June 15

  • Union Government has extended the last date for the receipt of nominations for the Gandhi Peace Prize-2020 up to 15th of June.
  • The Ministry of Culture invites nominations for awarding Gandhi Peace Prize every year.
  • For the year 2020, the last date for receiving the nominations was the 30th of April. 
  • Due to COVID-19 lockdown throughout the country, the last date for receipt of nominations for the Prize has now been extended up to 15th of June. The International Gandhi Peace Prize, named after Mahatma Gandhi, is awarded annually by the Government of India.
  • As a tribute to the ideals espoused by Gandhi, the Government of India launched the International Gandhi Peace Prize in 1995 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. 
  • This is an annual award given to individuals and institutions for their contributions towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods. 
  • The award carries Rs. 1 Crore (10 million) in cash, convertible in any currency in the world, a plaque and a citation.

6. China Wins FIDE Chess.com Online Nations Cup

  • China won the inaugural FIDE Chess.com Online Nations Cup. 
  • Their Superfinal with the USA ended 2-2 with China having drawn odds for winning the round-robin phase.
  • Co-organized by FIDE and Chess.com, the event had a peak of over a million concurrent viewers across all languages and broadcast partners.
  • The FIDE Chess.com Online Nations Cup was a team competition held from May 5-10, 2020 on Chess.com featuring Russia, USA, Europe, China, India, plus a team representing the "Rest of the World." The total prize fund was $180,000, sponsored by Chess.com.

7.  Ministry of MSME launches “Champions Portal”

  • On May 12, 2020, the Ministry of MSME (Micro Small and Medium Enterprises) launches Champions Portal. The portal acts as a technology-driven control room cum management information system.
  • The portal aims at creating modern ICT tools to assist Indian MSMEs. Champions stand for Creation and Harmonious Application of Modern Processes. It aims to increase output and national strength.
  • The portal will help small units to become big. This is done by solving their grievances, supporting, encouraging, helping and hand-holding.

8.  Former MP Raja Rangappa Nayak dies at 61

  • Former Lok Sabha member and senior JD(S) leader Raja Rangappa Naik passed away.
  • He had represented the Raichur Lok Sabha seat, when he had won the seat in the 1996 General election as the Janata Dal.
  • He had strived hard for the development of Kalyana Karnataka (old Hyderabad-Karnataka region).

9. Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi takes charge as Secretary of New & Renewable Energy Ministry

  • Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi (IAS) assumed charge as the new Secretary, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy on May 11, 2020. Chaturvedi is a 1987 Batch IAS officer from Jharkhand cadre. He will be succeeding Anand Kumar, who has become the Secretary in the Ministry of Culture.
  • Before this, Chaturvedi was serving as the Additional Chief Secretary and Additional Secretary (Climate Change Department ) of the Ministry of Climate Change Department, Environment & Forest under the Jharkhand Government.
  • He has held various positions in the past in the government of Jharkhand including at both field and policy level. He has also served as the Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance.

10. CSIR-NAL develops Non-Invasive Ventilator "Swasth Vayu'' to treat COVID-19 patients

  • The National Aerospace Laboratories said it has developed a non-invasive BiPAP ventilator to treat COVID-19 patients, in ''record'' 36 days. The ventilator named ''SwasthVayu'' is the culmination of efforts of a team of technocrats, medical practitioners and scientists at NAL. 
  • The major advantage of this device was that it was simple to use without any specialized nursing, cost effective, compact and configured with the majority of indigenous components.
  • It was ideal for treating COVID -19 patients in wards, make-shift hospitals, dispensaries and homes in the current Indian scenario. 
  • A BiPAP Non-Invasive Ventilator “SwasthVayu” is a microcontroller-based precise closed-loop adaptive control system. It has a built-in biocompatible “3D printed manifold & coupler” with a Highly Efficient Particulate Air (HEPA) filter.
