1. Nirmala Lakshman appointed Chairperson of The Hindu Group Publishing Private Limited
- Ms. Nirmala Lakshman has been unanimously appointed
Chairperson of the Board of Directors of The Hindu Group Publishing Private Limited (THGPPL) for a term of three years. She succeeds Ms. Malini Parthasarathy, who stepped down as Chairperson at the Board’s meeting on Monday, June 5, 2023 upon nearing the completion of her three-year term.
- Ms. Nirmala Lakshman holds a Ph.D. in post-modern literature and brings with her more than four decades of experience as an editor, writer, and strategist for The Hindu’s various publications. In her years as Joint Editor of The Hindu, she led the re-launch of several feature sections and the creation of new ones, such as ‘The Hindu Literary Review’, ‘Young World’, and ‘The Hindu in School’.

2. Mumbai most expensive city in India for expatriates
- Mumbai has been designated as the costliest city in India for
expatriates, with New Delhi and Bengaluru following closely in the second and third positions, respectively.
- According to Mercer’s 2023 Cost of Living survey, which includes 227 cities from across five continents, Mumbai, positioned at 147 in the global ranking, retains the top spot as India’s most expensive city for expats, while Hong Kong topped the global chart. According to the rankings, Mumbai has been positioned at 147 in the global ranking, New Delhi at 169, Chennai (184), Bengaluru (189), Hyderabad (202), Kolkata (211), and Pune (213).
3. Sarbananda Sonowal launches 'Sagar Samriddhi' online dredging monitoring system
- In a significant move to accelerate the 'Waste to Wealth'
initiative of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the 'Sagar Samriddhi' online dredging monitoring system on 12 June. This will help in making the seas and port clean. With this, real time information on dredging will be available.
- This system has been developed by National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC) the technological arm of MoPSW. The new technology Draft and Loading Monitor (DLM) system is a significant improvement over the older system. The 'Sagar Samriddhi' monitoring system aims to bring synergy among various input reports, including the daily dredging report and pre and post dredging survey data.
4. Government of India constituted peace committee in Manipur
- Government of India has constituted a Peace Committee in
Manipur under the Chairpersonship of Governor, Manipur Anusuiya Uikey on 10 June. The constitution of the Peace Committee in Manipur was announced by Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, during his visit to the state from May 29th, 2023 to June 1st, 2023.
- The committee consists of the chief minister, state government ministers, members of parliament (MPs), members of the legislative assembly (MLAs) and leaders of various political parties. The Committee also includes former civil servants, educationists, litterateurs, artists, social workers and representatives of different ethnic groups.

5. K.Prathapa Reddy appointed as new chairman of Andhra Pradesh Grameena Vikas Bank
- Prathapa Reddy, Deputy General Manager of State Bank of
India (SBI), has been appointed as Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Grameena Vikas Bank (APGVB) for 5 years. He took over the charge from K. Praveen Kumar.
- A deputy general manager with the SBI, he had successfully led the Real Estate Housing Business Unit (REHBU) at SBI Bhopal circle. He had held various positions, including that of the regional manager of Nizamabad and Himayat Nagar regions, overseeing rural, semi-urban, urban, and metro branches. He also served as the head of the agriculture development branch and retail assets centralised processing centre of SBI in Hyderabad.

6. Microsoft and AirJaldi Partner to Expand Internet Connectivity in Rural India
- Microsoft, in collaboration with AirJaldi Networks, a leading
provider of internet connectivity solutions for rural areas, has signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) titled 'Contentful Connectivity'. The objective of this program is to expand access to high-speed internet and meaningful connectivity in rural regions of India by partnering with private, public, and non-profit sectors.

7. India & Serbia agree to set bilateral trade of 1 Billion Euros
- India-&-Serbia-agree-to-set-bilateral-trade-of-1-Billion-
EurosPresident Droupadi Murmu and her Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic on 8 June in Belgrade agreed to set a target for bilateral trade from the present 320 million euros to one billion euros by the end of the decade. President Draupadi Murmu is on a three-day state visit to Serbia from June 7 to 9. During the visit, President Draupadi Murmu highlighted that the relations between the two sides have a shared understanding of each other's core interests.
- In a joint press statement, President Murmu highlighted the positive outcomes of the delegation-level talks and the resolve of the two countries to work on diverse areas of potential cooperation. President Murmu's official engagements in Serbia included a guard of honor at the Serbia Palace, restricted-level talks, delegation-level talks, a joint media address, and a business event.

8. India’s Internet economy to reach $1 trillion by 2030’
- A continued shift in consumer behavior and the evolution of
the business ecosystem will underpin the growth of India’s Internet economy, from approximately $175 billion of consumption in 2022 to $1 trillion by 2030, according to a report by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company.
- The e-Conomy of a Billion Connected Indians’, said the confluence of three crucial forces — digital-seeking behaviors among Internet users in Tier 2+ locations, digitisation of large, traditional businesses along with a growing start-up ecosystem, and the success of India’s homegrown digital public goods or ‘India Stack’ — has positioned the Internet economy for acceleration.
9. India finishes on top at International Shooting Sport Federation Junior World Cup:
- India finished on top of the International Shooting Sport
Federation Junior World Cup with 15 medals, including six gold, six silver, and three bronze medals, at Suhl, Germany. On the final day, yesterday India’s junior Trap shooters could not make it to the medal round after finishing outside the top six in the qualification round. With this achievement, India has now finished on top of all the ISSF Junior World Cups and World Championships held since 2019.

10. Havildar Alby D'Cruz, the first Keralite to receive the Ashoka Chakra, passed away
- On 6 June 2023, Havaldar Alby D'Cruz, the first Keralite to
receive the Ashoka Chakra, passed away at the age of 87. In 1962, he received the Ashoka Chakra (3rd Class) from President Rajendra Prasad. Later the name of this award was changed to Shaurya Chakra. D'Cruz served in the Indian Army as a Lance Naik in the Assam Rifles. His battalion was assigned the task of countering the Naga rebels.
