1. World Bank cuts India's growth forecast to 6.3% for FY24
  • The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) slashed their economic growth forecasts for India for 2023-24 (FY24) by 30 and 80 bps to 6.3 and 6.4 per cent respectively, citing risks to the outlook arising from both global and domestic factors. 
  • The World Bank forecasts real global GDP to climb 2.1% in 2023, up from the previous forecast of 1.7% in January. However, this growth rate remains below the 2022 rate of 3.1%.

2. World Food Safety Day is observed every year on 7th June
  • World Food Safety Day is observed annually on 7 June to highlight the importance of maintaining food standards and protecting consumers from foodborne illnesses. The theme of World Food Safety Day 2023 is "Food Standards Save Lives".
  • The theme emphasises the important role of food safety standards in ensuring the well-being of individuals. World Food Safety Day encourages cooperation among nations and raises awareness of the importance of food safety standards in protecting public health.
3. India's Tata Group signs $1.6 billion EV battery plant deal
  • India's Tata Group signed an outline deal on building a lithium-ion cell factory, based on investment of about 130 billion rupees ($1.58 billion), as part of the nation's efforts to create its own electric vehicle supply chain.
  • Compared to the size of its population, India's car market is tiny. Tata Motors dominates its electric vehicle (EV) sales, which made up just 1% of India's total car sales of about 3.8 million last year. It would have initial manufacturing capacity of 20 Gigawatt hours (GWh), which could be doubled in a second phase of expansion.

4. Kerala becomes first state to have its own internet service provider K-FON
  • Kerala became the first state to have its own broadband service K-FON or ‘Kerala Fibre Optic Network’, a state-run initiative launched by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan-led government, in a bid to improve internet accessibility to the people.
  • While launching the service, the CM advocated for universal internet access and hailed the initiative as a pivotal step towards transforming Kerala into a knowledge economy and fostering an innovation-driven society.

5. Shri Nitin Gadkari inaugurates and lays foundation stone of four projects worth Rs 1450 Crore in Assam
  • Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the 4-Lane Section between Nagaon Bypass-Teliagaon, and Teliagaon-Rangagara and laid the foundation for Mangaldai Bypass and the 4-lane section between Daboka-Parakhuwa in Assam, in the presence of Chief Minister Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma , MP Shri Dilip Saikia , MP Shri Pradyut Bordoloi , and State Minister of Forest & Environment Shri Chandra Mohan Patowary through video conferencing.
  • These 4 projects are worth 1450 Crores symbolizing a significant investment in the state’s infrastructure.

6. India conducts Asia’s first demo of performance-based navigation for helicopters
  • The technology was jointly developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation and the Airports Authority of India. India conducted Asia’s first demonstration of performance-based navigation for helicopters for a flight from Juhu in Mumbai to Pune using GAGAN satellite technology.
  • GAGAN — GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation — is a state-of-the-art space-based augmentation system which adds more accuracy to output of GPS Navigation system by providing local geographical positioning for better accuracy of location of aircraft for more efficient traffic management. The technology was jointly developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
7. AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh top medical colleges in India: NIRF 2023
  • Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has been ranked the second best medical institute in the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings, 2023, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.PGIMER, Chandigarh has been ranked 2nd position 6th time in a row from 2018 to 2023.
  • AIIMS, New Delhi has been ranked First in this category and CMC, Vellore has been ranked third. On the basis of these parameters, the large institutions are given a common overall rank as well as a discipline-specific rank as applicable.
8. SBI launches project Kuber in Bengaluru
  • The State Bank of India (SBI), Bengaluru (Karnataka) Circle has launched Project Kuber, under which there are 4 Transaction Banking Hubs, and 1 Corporate Salary Package Hub, in the city to source, facilitate, and cater to the various banking needs of customers. These hubs will help in increasing the market share in liability products of SBI.
  • The hubs were inaugurated by the Chief General Manager of State Bank of India Bengaluru Circle, Nand Kishore, and are located at the SBI Administrative Building, Mysore Bank Circle, KG Road, Bengaluru, and Sampige Road, Malleshwaram.

9. President Droupadi Murmu Honoured with Suriname’s highest civilian award
  • President Droupadi Murmu has been conferred the ‘Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star’, Suriname's highest civilian award. Murmu arrived in Suriname on a three-day state visit, her first since assuming office in July last year.
  • The award was presented by Surinamese president Chandrikapersad Santokhi at a ceremony held at the presidential palace. President Murmu thanked President Santokhi and the Suriname government for the honour.
10. Veteran Hindi & Marathi film Actress Sulochana Latkar passed away
  • Renowned Hindi & Marathi film Actress Sulochana Latkar passed away at the age of 94 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Sulochana was born as Nagabai on July 30, 1928, in Belgaum, Karnataka. She was a well-known actress of Marathi and Hindi cinema and acted in 50 films in Marathi and around 250 films in Hindi. Sulochana Latkar made her debut in films in 1946.
  • She was most known for her performances in Marathi films such as Sasurvas (1946), Meeth Bhakar (1949), Vahinichya Bangdya (1953), Dhakti Jaoo (1958) and Sangte Aika (1959) in the lead roles. Latkar was a recipient of the civilian honour of Padma Shri in 1999 for her contribution to cinema.
