It can now independently design and offer its own undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral (PhD) programmes, as well as innovative certificate and diploma courses in education and pedagogy.
  • Expansion of Regional Institutes: The "Deemed University" status extends to NCERT’s six constituent units, including the five Regional Institutes of Education (RIEs) in Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mysore, and Shillong, and the PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education in Bhopal. This allows these regional hubs to function as high-standard research and teacher-training universities.
  • Mandatory Academic Standards: To maintain this status, NCERT must now comply with strict UGC regulations. This includes participating in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), seeking NAAC accreditation, and implementing the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) to facilitate digital credit transfer for its students.

  • A "Sham" Transition: The vote took place in a parliament dominated by the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and appointed military legislators. Most international observers and opposition groups have dismissed the process as a "sham" designed to provide a veneer of civilian legitimacy to continued military rule.
