1. Argentina's Celeste Saulo becomes first woman leader of World Meteorological Organization
  • Celeste Saulo of Argentina has been appointed as the first female Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Saulo won a landslide vote at the UN Climate and weather agency's Congress in Geneva. Saulo has served as the director of Argentina’s National Meteorological Service since 2014. The leadership election of the World Meteorological Congress takes place every four years. The agency plays a key role in coordinating international meteorological work.

2. Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar to be renamed as Ahilya Nagar
  • The Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde announced that the Ahmednagar district in the state will be renamed as ‘Ahilya Nagar’. The decision has been taken on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Ahilya Bai Holkar, the hereditary noble queen of the Maratha Empire, in early-modern India.
  • The event was attended by Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar among others. Renaming of the district will reflect the admiration and respect for Ahilyadevi Holkar’s contributions to Maharashtra. Ahilyabai Holkar was born in Chaundi village of Ahmedanagar district on 31st May 1725.

3. J&K’s Kishtwar will become north India’s major 'power hub'
  • Union Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, announced that Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar will become North India's major "power hub" generating approximately 6,000 MW of power upon the completion of ongoing power projects.
  • The minister held a meeting to review the progress of various hydroelectric power projects in the Kishtwar and Doda districts of Jammu and Kashmir. NHPC chairman Rajiv Vishnoi, Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Devansh Yadav, and officials provided updates on the projects during the meeting. The surplus power generated in Kishtwar will not only be utilized within the Union Territory but can also be availed by other states.

4. Ajay Yadav appointed as new Managing Director of Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited
  • The government has appointed Ajay Yadav, a 2005 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Bihar cadre as the Managing Director (MD) of Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. (SECI). Ajay Yadav succeeded Suman Sharma. Prior to this appointment Ajay Yadav served as the Joint Secretary, Ministry of New Renewable Energy, Government of India (GoI).
5. India-EU Connectivity Conference to be organized in Meghalaya
  • India-EU Connectivity Conference is being organized by the Ministry of External Affairs, EU Delegation to India and the Asian Confluence on June 1 and 2. The two-day conclave is aimed at promoting investments in the Northeastern states of India and expanding connectivity to neighbouring countries like Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
  • The conference will focus on connectivity through three pillars: Digital, Energy and Transport. The India-EU Connectivity Partnership was launched during the meeting of the leaders of India and the European Union in May 2021. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad San gma and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Rajkumar Ranjan Singh will inaugurate the Conference. Senior officials from the Government, European Union Commission, North Eastern States, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh and the private sector are expected to participate in the conference.

6. Nagpur AIIMS becomes the country’s first hospital to get NABH accreditation
  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur has become the first of all AIIMS to receive National Accreditation Board for Hospitals(NABH) accreditation. The NABH accreditation is a globally recognized standard for healthcare quality. It assesses the performance of hospitals in various areas including patient care, safety, and organizational efficiency. IIMS Nagpur achieved this accreditation by demonstrating its commitment to excellence in all areas.
7. South Korea's An Se-young wins Thailand Open final
  • World No. 2 Ann Se-young of South Korea claimed her fourth title in 2023 by defeating China's He Bingjiao in the women's singles final of the Thailand Open badminton tournament on June 4. Thailand Open Badminton was played in Bangkok. 21-year-old Ann Si-young won 21-10, 21-19. The South Korean player has been able to make the finals of every tournament he has played this year, winning titles at the All England Open, India and Indonesia.
  • She will be eyeing his fifth title at the Singapore Badminton Open, which begins at the Indoor Stadium.
  • In the men's final, Thailand's Kunlavut Witidson won the first gold medal by defeating Hong Kong's Lee Cheuk Yiu 21-12, 21-10 in just 38 minutes. He became the fourth Thai man to win the tournament.
8. Texas becomes largest state to ban transgender care for minors
  • Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill that bans transgender healthcare including puberty blockers and hormone therapy for minors, making Texas the largest of the 20 states to have outlawed gender-affirming care.
  • Republican lawmakers across the country have promoted similar bills, saying they mistrust the consensus among major medical associations that endorse gender-affirming care as needed and even life-saving for trans youth after extensive evaluation.
9. Ghanaian writer and feminist Ama Ata Aidoo passes away at 81
  • Ama Ata Aidoo, the iconic Ghanaian writer whose classics The Dilemma of a Ghost and Changeswere taught to children in West African schools for decades, has died aged 81. The death of theplaywright and poet who was famous for her feminist ideals was announced in a short statement byher family.
  • In 1965, Aidoo achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first African woman to publish aplay with her debut work, The Dilemma of a Ghost. This accomplishment marked the beginning ofher remarkable journey as one of the most renowned writers on the continent, serving as aninspiration to subsequent generations of authors, artists, and feminists.
10. Congress only MP from Maharashtra Balubhau Dhanorkar Passed Away
  • The Congress’ lone Lok Sabha member from Maharashtra, Suresh alias Balubhau Dhanorkar passedaway at the age of 47 in New Delhi, Delhi. Dhanorkar began his political career in the Shiv Sena ledby Balasaheb Thackeray and rose through the party ranks to become a Member of the Legislative Assembly in 2014.
  • He was the only Lok Sabha member of the Congress from Maharashtra.Dhanorkar’s wife Pratibha is a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Warora-Bhadrawatiassembly seat in Maharashtra.
