CRPF Foundation Day 2026 marks the 87th anniversary of India's largest Central Armed Police Force.On 27 July, the CRPF Foundation Day celebrated in 2026 to pay tribute to the founding of the Central Reserve Police Force, which is the largest Central Armed Police Force in India. The event commemorates the exceptional bravery and sacrifice of a large number of CRPF officials operating in the country to maintain the law and order situation, fight terrorism, tackle Left-wing extremism, ensure election security, and conduct rescue operations in case of any calamity. After India gained independence, Parliament passed the CRPF Act, 1949, and on 28 December 1949, the name was changed to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Since then, CRPF has grown to be the leading internal security force of India having various responsibilities such as law enforcement, counter-terrorism, election security, as well as responding to disasters.
The day gives us an opportunity to recognize the courage of CRPF personnel working across different parts of the country in difficult conditions.

It was formed as the Police Force of the Crown Representative for the purpose of maintaining public order in the Indian states during the last years of the British rule in India.

The CRPF made a notable contribution in unification of the country by helping in integration of the Indian princely states with the Indian Union and restoring law and order in such regions as Junagadh, Kathiawar, and PEPSU.

On October 21, 1959, in an ambush made by the Chinese army, 10 soldiers of the CRPF became martyrs.

The CRPF has several specialised units, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), VIP Security Wing, and Mahila Battalions.

The force has thwarted attacks on important national landmarks, controlled militancy in Punjab and insurgency in Tripura, and made significant contributions to eradicating Naxalism.The Naxal movement is most active in the “Red Corridor,” spanning parts of several Indian states, including Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra, and Bihar.

The CRPF has paid a heavy price, with 2,255 of its soldiers making the supreme sacrifice and being honoured with decorations, including the George Cross, Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Shaurya Chakra.
