Constitution Day
Constitution Day of India, or Samvidhan Divas, is celebrated annually on November 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on this day in 1949. The Constitution officially came into effect on January 26, 1950, marking the establishment of India as a sovereign, democratic republic, a day now celebrated as Republic Day. Declared in 2015, Constitution Day honors the principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity enshrined in the document. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the “chief architect” of the Indian Constitution, aptly described it as “not a mere lawyer’s document; it is a vehicle of life, and its spirit is always the spirit of the age.” In 2024, Constitution Day falls on Tuesday, November 26, offering a moment to reflect on the values that continue to guide the nation.
