1. Tamil Nadu set to be 1st State to give kids Covid vaccine
  • Tamil Nadu is to become the first in the country to administer Covid-19 vaccines to those aged 2-18 years.
  • The Centre has made a formal announcement on the vaccine and sent the proposal for an expert opinion, and once Tamil Nadu gets the nod, the State would be the first to administer the vaccine.
  • An expert panel of the Central drug authority has recommended granting emergency use authorisation to Bharat Biotech's Covaxin for children and adolescents in the 2 to 18 years age group with certain conditions.

2. International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2021: 17 October
  • The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed every year on 17 October across the globe.
  • The day aims to raise awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution around the world, particularly in developing countries.
  • 2021 Theme: Building Forward Together: Ending Persistent Poverty, Respecting all People and our Planet”.
  • The first International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was held in Paris, France in 1987.
  • It was officially recognized by UN General Assembly in December 1992.
3. India re-elected to UN Human Rights Council for new three year term from 2022-2024
  • India has been re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for a sixth term on October 14, 2021 with overwhelming majority.
  • The new three year term of India will be effective from January 2022 to December 2024.
  • India received 184 votes of the 193 votes cast in the election.
  • The elections were held for a total of 18 seats and countries needed a minimum of 97 votes to get elected to the 47 UN member council.
  • The headquarters of the UNHRC is in Geneva, Switzerland.

4. China- Russia holds naval drill “Joint Sea 2021” in Sea of Japan
  • The China and Russia joint naval exercises “Joint Sea 2021” kicked off at Russia’s Peter the Great Gulf, in the Sea of Japan, on October 14, 2021.
  • The exercises will culminate on October 17, 2021.
  • During the war game, the combined force would practice shooting at targets designed to imitate enemy surface ships and hold air-defence drills.

5. SEBI constitutes 4-member high powered advisory committee on settlement orders; Head – Vijay C Daga
  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), has constituted a four-member “high powered advisory committee on settlement orders and compounding of offences”.
  • The Chairman of the committee will be Vijay C Daga, retired judge of High Court of Bombay.
  • The terms of reference of the Committee will be as per “Securities and Exchange Board of India (Settlement Proceedings) Regulations, 2018”.

6. RBI approves re-appointment of Amitabh Chaudhry as MD,CEO of Axis Bank
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the re-appointment of Amitabh Chaudhry as Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of private lender Axis Bank for a period of three years.
  • The second three-year term of Chaudhry will begin from January 1, 2022.
  • Prior to joining Axis Bank, Mr Chaudhry was the MD and CEO of HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company.

7. Pradeep Kumar Panja appointed as Chairman of Karnataka Bank
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the appointment of Pradeep Kumar Panja as the Chairman Karnataka Bank Ltd.
  • Pradeep Kumar Panja will begin his role as the part-time non-executive Chairman with effect from November 14, 2021 for a period of three years.
  • He will succeed P Jayarama Bhat, who will retire on November 13, 2021.

8. Navrang Saini gets additional charge as Chairperson of IBBI
  • Navrang Saini has been appointed as the interim Chairperson of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI), for a period of three months, or till the joining of a new incumbent to the post, or until further orders.
  • Mr. Saini, who is a Whole Time Member of IBBI, has been assigned additional charge of Chairperson in addition to his existing duties.
  • The post was lying vacant after M.S. Sahoo retired on September 30, after completing a five-year tenure.

9. Chennai Super Kings wins 2021 IPL title
  • Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the finals to win the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) title.
  • This was the 14th edition of IPL which is an India-based Cricket league in 20-20 format. This was the 4th win of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL, having previously won the tournament in 2010, 2011, and 2018.
  • Here are some important points from exam point of view:
  • M.S. Dhoni is the captain of CSK the winning team. Eoin Morgan is the captain of the Runner up team i.e Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He is from England.
  • The first half of IPL was played in India, while the second half was played in UAE. The finals were held at Dubai International Stadium.
  • Player of the Tournament: Harshal Patel (RCB)
  • Highest Run Scorer (Orange Cap): Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK) (635 runs)
  • Highest Wicket Taker (Purple Cap): Harshal Patel (RCB) (32 wickets)

10. Ritesh Chauhan appointed as CEO of PM Fasal Bima Yojana
  • Senior bureaucrat Ritesh Chauhan has been appointed as the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and Joint Secretary, Agriculture under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.
  • Chauhan will have a combined tenure of seven years up to September 22, 2023.
  • He is a 2005-batch IAS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre.
  • He will succeed Ashish Kumar Bhutani, who was appointed in 2018.
