1. Manik Saha takes oath as Tripura Chief Minister
  • Manik Saha (Tripura BJP chief) has become the 12th Chief Minister of Tripura after Biplab Kumar Deb resigned from the post.
  • Tripura's governor Satyadev Narayan Arya has administered the oath of office on May 15 at Raj Bhawan in Agartala (Capital city).
  • Dr Saha is a dental surgeon by profession and joined BJP in 2016 after quitting Congress.
  • Deb had taken oath as the CM of Tripura in 2018, ending the 25-year Communist rule in the state.

2. Vesak Day or Buddha Purnima 2022 celebrates on 16 May 2022
  • This year Vesak Day or Buddha Purnima has celebrated on 16 May 2022. “Vesak”, the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May, is the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world. It was on the Day of Vesak two and a half millennia ago, in the year 623 B.C., that the Gautama Buddha was born. It was also on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha attained enlightenment, and it was on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha in his eightieth year passed away.
  • The birth of Gautama Buddha is commemorated by Buddhists and Hindus all over the world as the major festival of Buddha Purnima in countries like India, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, Thailand, Tibet, China, Korea, Laos, Vietnam, Mongolia, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia and Sri Lanka (where it is called Vesak) but every country celebrates it differently.
3. Nidhi Chibber appointed CBSE chairperson
  • Nidhi Chibber has been appointed as the chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education(CBSE).
  • She is from 1994 batch IAS officer of Chhattisgarh cadre and currently working as an Additional Secretary in Ministry of Heavy Industries.
  • Vivek Kumar Dewangen from a 1993 batch IAS officer of Manipur cadre has been named Chairman of REC Ltd. (Ministry of Power).
  • S Gopalakrishnan has been appointed as Additional Secretary in Department of Health and Family Welfare

4. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahayan elected President of UAE
  • Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been elected as president of the United Arab Emirates after the death of former leader Sheikh Khalifa.
  • Sheikh Mohamed was elected by the Federal Supreme Council, becoming the ruler of the oil-rich country which was founded by his father in 1971.

5. Collaboration between MoRD and Amazon for online marketing of SHG products through MoU Signing and Exchange
  • Ministry of Rural Development has signed an MoU with Amazon Seller Services Private Limited at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • Aim: To promote products listed by SHGs through the Saheli Storefront.
  • With the help of this MoU SHG entrepreneurs under NRLM can be able to offer their products to buyers across India through AmazonSaheli Storefront.
  • MoRD will conduct workshops for awareness creation and assist the sellers in listing their products with Amazon.

6. Reliance top-ranked Indian firm on Forbes Global 2000 list
  • Reliance Industries has climbed two spots to No. 53 on Forbes' latest Global 2000 list of public companies worldwide, followed by State Bank of India (105), HDFC Bank (153) and ICICI Bank (204).
  • Other Indian Firms: ONGC at 228 ranks, HDFC at 268, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) at 357, TCS at 384, Tata Steel at 407 and Axis Bank at 431.
  • The Forbes Global 2000 ranks the largest companies in the world on the basis of four metrics: sales, profits, assets and market value.

7. India to host key SCO anti-terror meet
  • India will be hosting the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's (SCO's)-Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) in New Delhi from May 16th to 19th.
  • The Security Advisers of the National Security Councils of India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan participated in the meeting.
  • India has taken the chairmanship of the Council of Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of SCO last year for a period of one year.

  • Pine Labs has appointed Vijayalakshmi Swaminathan as the company’s new Chief People Officer.

9. Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary notified as 52nd Reserve Forest for Wild cats
  • Bhupender Yadav (Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change) has announced that Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan has been notified as the 52nd Reserve of India.
  • It will help to conserve biodiversity and bring ecotourism and development to the area.
  • The newly notified tiger reserve includes the tiger habitat between Ranthambore Tiger Reserve and Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve.

10. Former Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds dies
  • Former Australia cricketer and two-time World Cup winner Andrew Symonds died in a car crash at 46.
  • He made his first-debut for Queensland in 1994-95 season.
  • He was a right-handed batter, who was known for scoring runs at a quick pace and has a career strike rate of 92.44 in 198 ODI matches.
  • He was a part of the Ricky Ponting-led side that won the ICC Men’s World Cup in 2003 and 2007.
  • He has played IPL for Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians.
